New REWE in Munich's Westend: 25 jobs and 12,000 items!
A lot is happening in Munich: A new REWE supermarket is expected to open on Heimeranplatz in December 2025. This will open its doors on the ground floor of a new building on Garmischerstrasse and Ridlerstrasse. With a sales area of 770 square meters and around 12,000 items, the market will be the first of its kind in the Westend. So far, residents and office workers have only had access to Aldi, Edeka, Lidl and various organic markets. REWE Group has rented the entire ground floor of the “Heimeran” project from Ehret + Klein, and the rental agreement covers an impressive 1,200 square meters. This means that the property, with a total rental area of 14,700 square meters, is already 96 percent rented, which underlines the attractiveness of the location.
“We want to establish ourselves as an integral part of the neighborhood,” explains managing director Eren Gül. The focus of the new supermarket is particularly on local office customers and nearby schools. By creating 25 new jobs, REWE also supports the local economy and gives the region new life. “Social responsibility and involvement in the neighborhood are essential for us,” adds Gül. The best products fresh at a glance – this should also apply to the new customers at Heimeranplatz.
The location and the surroundings
The building, designed by Ochs Schmidhuber Architects, meets the DGNB Gold standard and not only offers a large retail area, but also an 800 square meter roof terrace and its own underground car park. The location is optimally chosen to address the intended target group and thus be successful in the long term.
This opening comes at a time when Munich's economy remains stable despite challenges such as geopolitical uncertainties and rising unemployment at 4.5 percent. The city can proudly boast a record number of employees subject to social insurance contributions of around 970,600 people. This resilience is supported by a diversified mix of industries, ranging from high-tech to industry to services, and the tourism industry is also in high demand with almost 20 million overnight stays in 2024.
Investments and future prospects
The high tax revenues of 3.35 billion euros in 2024 will enable Munich to make central investments in infrastructure, education and climate and social policy. But despite this economic success, the shortage of skilled workers remains a central issue that cannot be resolved without targeted measures. Therefore, the Munich employment and qualification program (MBQ) will be continued continuously.
The new REWE branch not only establishes an important local supplier, but also sets a further building block to strengthen the quality of life in Westend. When the market opens in December, residents and professionals can look forward to an enrichment of their everyday lives.
