Commuters are happy: S-Bahn between Munich and Holzkirchen is back online!
After weeks of closure, commuters between Munich and Holzkirchen are breathing a sigh of relief: starting this week, the railway line will be used regularly again after it had to be closed at the end of June due to damage to several switches. The Munich S-Bahn, line S3, will start operating again from Thursday afternoon and will take travelers safely to their destination. Augsburger Allgemeine reports that the repairs at Deisenhofen train station have also been completed.
The situation was anything but pleasant for many commuters and students. The route closure resulted in several restrictions. The S3 then only ran between Mammendorf and Giesing, while numerous BRB trains from the south only reached Holzkirchen - a circumstance that led to frustration, especially among travelers. Alternatives were difficult to find because the replacement transport, organized with buses and large-capacity taxis, was far from meeting demand. Many had to adapt to longer travel times, which did not necessarily increase their motivation to travel.
Switch problems and repairs
The decision to block was made after a regular inspection revealed significant damage to the switches in Deisenhofen and Unterhaching. The safety of passengers is the top priority here, which is why the railway required these comprehensive measures. The Deutsche Bahn states that the broken switches were replaced with temporary straight rails. However, the work on the custom-made products is complex, which is why a forecast for final completion cannot be made until next week.
The closure would not only have affected the S-Bahn line. Many regional trains that traveled to Holzkirchen also had to lose their regular schedule during this time and usually did not end at their usual destination either. Day24 reported on the high number of calls to the BRB, especially from commuters who were looking for alternative travel options.
The way back to normality
From Thursday most restrictions will be lifted. The Bavarian Regiobahn will again offer some trains to the Oberland and Mangfalltal. The replacement traffic regulations still apply for Thursday, but normal operations are expected from Friday. Some connections will initially be resumed, but the DB and BRB ask for your understanding that not all trips will be available immediately. Vehicles and personnel first have to get to their locations before everything runs smoothly again.
All traffic between Giesing and Holzkirchen will now be reopened. Even though there could still be minor delays, the final end of the route closure is in sight. Good news for everyone who relies on the train or is simply planning a trip to the Oberland. However, the recommendations to use the S5 as an alternative route during the construction period remain in place in order to rule out the final uncertainties.
