Summer break 2025: Without Lanz, Maischberger and Illner!
Exciting times are on the agenda in Germany – at least in the political talk show landscape. Politicians are currently enjoying their parliamentary summer break, which lasts from mid-July to early September 2025. During this time, the popular political talks on ARD and ZDF also take a break, which means a valued time of peace for many viewers. News.de reports that until then, viewers will have to do without programs like “Hart aber fair” or the formats by Markus Lanz, Maybrit Illner and Sandra Maischberger.
A look at the last broadcast dates shows that the popular talk show series is completely on its summer break. Caren Miosga from ARD had her last broadcast on June 22nd and will return on August 31st. The schedule for the other formats looks like this: Sandra Maischberger ended her broadcasts on July 15th and will also be on air again on September 16th. Markus Lanz and Maybrit Illner from ZDF also have their last appearances on July 24th, with a return on August 26th and September 11th respectively. Mercury has suspended the program data and shows that the political debate will probably not develop any further until the programs are renewed.
The oblique break and its meaning
This time of absence has its reasons: At ARD and ZDF it is tradition to leave the talk shows on hold during the summer months. The break for Markus Lanz and Maybrit Illner is almost four weeks, while Sandra Maischberger's return is also eight weeks. The last broadcast of “Hart aber fair” took place on May 12th, with a long break until September 15th. RND emphasizes that although no new content will be produced during this time, there is still the opportunity for spontaneous broadcasts.
There are already alternatives to fill the gap, such as the newly launched political series “Where we are, is up,” which recently celebrated its world premiere. This format is intended to entertain viewers during the summer break and cover some of the topics being debated. Nevertheless, the classic talk fireworks of the presenting faces remain unforgettable for many fans during this time.
It remains to be seen whether viewers miss the silly season or are hoping for new ideas. The political talks have shaped the political climate in Germany and when they return in autumn, exciting discussions and interesting guest appearances can be expected.
