Civilian patrol delights with arrest after failed attack in Munich!

Early on Friday morning there was a sensational incident on Schwanthalerstrasse in Munich. Shortly after three o'clock, a man and a woman tried to rob a 36-year-old from the Munich district of his backpack. However, the attack went differently than planned: a civilian police patrol that happened to be passing by observed the incident and intervened immediately.

The 36-year-old was held down and beaten by two other people during the attack, but luckily only sustained abrasions. Thanks to the quick intervention of the police officers, the robbery was prevented and the suspects, a 33-year-old from the Ebersberg district and a 35-year-old companion, were arrested. Amazingly, both have previous convictions for property crimes, and the man also has a history of drug-related offenses. A breath alcohol test showed the woman had a blood alcohol level of 1.5 per mille. Both are now expecting a complaint about the attempted robbery, like this South Germans reported.

Increase in robberies

This incident is part of a worrying trend in robberies in Germany. According to Statista, over 38,000 robbery crimes were recorded by the police in 2022. This shows a growing level of concern, which is particularly worrying in urban areas such as Munich.

Regardless of whether it is a case of handbag snatching or gas station robberies, the number of unreported cases is probably even higher, as many victims do not report the crime for fear of further consequences. However, with a clearance rate of almost 60% for robbery crimes, the police have a solid record that gives hope for greater security.

More raids in the city

In addition to the current incident, there are also other criminal disputes in Munich that are making people sit up and take notice. As the Augsburger Allgemeine reported that it was only at the end of April that a 44-year-old social worker in Munich-Thalkirchen was threatened with a gun by two masked perpetrators. They asked him to open a safe, which culminated in an argument in which the perpetrators used violence. The social worker was injured while the perpetrators fled with an unspecified amount of cash.

The increasing number of worrying incidents of robbery and property crime therefore require sustainable crime prevention measures. It remains to be hoped that the authorities can further improve security in the city and curb crime.

In times like these, good neighbors and, above all, vigilance are required. Together with the police, each individual can contribute to strengthening the feeling of security in the city.
