Delay, chaos and confusion: The nightmare on the BRB route!

On August 26, 2025, a trip from Munich to Salzburg became a nightmare for many passengers. Travelers on the Bavarian Regiobahn (BRB) experienced a true odyssey that lasted almost six hours instead of the planned 1 hour and 47 minutes. The planned departure at 9:55 a.m. did not end in Salzburg until 3:04 p.m., which caused frustration and confusion. Mercury reports that cable damage in Munich East was responsible for the delays.

The situation came to a head right at the start of the trip. After getting off the train, the passengers had to take the S-Bahn to Ostbahnhof. A railway employee suggested taking a train to Kufstein and changing in Rosenheim. But that turned out to be pointless because the correct connection was changed again at short notice.

Confusion at the main station

When we arrived at the main station, the connection was initially confirmed, but then redirected to platform 17. In the rush, around 500 passengers had to move between the tracks to find the right train. As the Bavarian Radio reported that the situation was tense overall, as numerous trains between Munich and Salzburg had to contend with delays lasting hours and numerous cancellations that day.

The chaos was compounded by unplanned delays in construction work between Rosenheim and Freilassing. The railway apologized and acknowledged the difficult situation of the passengers. Many of them stood at the train station in Salzburg and were faced with delays of up to three hours.

Just in time at Chiemsee

A bright spot during the long journey was probably the sight of Lake Chiemsee, which the travelers passed at 2:20 p.m. But here too there were additional challenges: a change was necessary in Rosenheim because the train could not continue.

The chaos meant that travelers not only had to find difficult information, but also had to switch to other means of transport. The Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) reported delays of up to 120 minutes and a continued tense traffic situation. Current reports indicate that these disruptions could continue until midday on Tuesday.

During the trip there was also positive feedback about the staff's support of travelers. One employee at Ostbahnhof was particularly recognized for his efforts to continue to provide travelers with information despite the challenges.

It remains to be seen how the railway will deal with the ongoing construction work, which could cause additional inconvenience in the coming weeks. For everyone who relies on the connection between Munich and Salzburg, the hope remains that future journeys will run more smoothly.
