Schwabing bus accident: cyclist has an accident, driver flees!

On Friday afternoon, June 13, 2025, a disturbing incident occurred on Hohenzollernstrasse in Schwabing, just a few steps away from Kurfürstenplatz. At around 4:15 p.m., a 25-year-old cyclist was riding on the bike path towards Leopoldstrasse when the path ended abruptly at the intersection with Tengstrasse and the cyclist was forced to move onto the road. This often criticized area is quite narrow and is restricted by parked cars and tram tracks.

At that moment a bus with a trailer approached and overtook the cyclist. There was an unpleasant contact: the trailer of the bus hit the cyclist, causing her to be pushed against parked cars and fall to the ground. The rescue workers who were notified immediately took the injured person to the hospital. It is important to note that the bus driver ran away after the accident without fulfilling his legal obligations. However, the police were able to quickly contact the bus company and identify the driver because it was a regular bus like that tz reported.

Dangerous traffic conditions for cyclists

The incident highlights general road safety for cyclists in Munich. According to statistics published by ADFC was published, there were 2,975 cycling accidents in Munich and the surrounding area in 2021, which corresponds to a decrease of 13 percent compared to the previous year. The number of injured cyclists was 2,658, including 318 seriously injured people and four deaths. However, against this background, the decline is seen as temporary as the pandemic and the associated restrictions affected traffic. Nevertheless, the ADFC places the emphasis on the need for better cycling infrastructure and safer traffic conditions.

The risk of accidents for cyclists remains an important topic of public discussion. Andreas Schön, 1st Chairman of the ADFC Munich, expresses his concern about the persistently high number of cycling accidents and calls for increased measures to improve safety for cyclists, especially for weaker road users such as children and older people. In order to increase safety, the association proposes, among other things, protected cycle paths, safe intersections and the introduction of a 30 km/h speed limit in residential areas.

Although the damage to the bicycle and parked vehicles was minor in this specific case, the health and safety of cyclists remains the focus. Such incidents show that there is a need for action to make cycling in the city a safe way to get around. There is a great responsibility on both road users and city planners to ensure more protection on the roads.
