Unna Fire Department receives three new vehicles – Sparkasse donates 40,000 euros!

On Monday, June 30, 2025, a significant step to strengthen the fire brigade fleet was taken in Unna. Mayor Dirk Wigant ceremoniously handed over the keys to two new equipment trucks and a personnel transport vehicle to the Unna fire department. This investment comes at a time when challenges for the fire service are often increasing. The Sparkasse UnnaKamen made a significant contribution with a generous donation of 40,000 euros to enable the purchase of the personnel transport vehicle. This vehicle will particularly benefit the Unna-Nord youth fire department, which was founded in 2025 and currently has 20 young people who regularly learn how to use fire equipment.

The youth fire brigade's personnel transport vehicle is used in the Afferde, Alte Heide, Colonie and Königsborn areas. Mirco Rienhoff, a board member of Sparkasse UnnaKamen, emphasized in his remarks the importance of supporting the youth fire brigade in order to prepare the next generations for the challenges of the fire service. The two new equipment trolleys are not only important for full-time and volunteer workers, but also play a central role in the logistical support of operations, especially during larger events such as storms. An additional 40,000 euros were invested in equipping these equipment trucks for the special information and communication unit (ICT), which can thus coordinate operations efficiently.

Additional reinforcements for the emergency services

But it's not just the Unna fire department that benefits from new vehicles. Last year, on November 6, 2024, two emergency medical vehicles and a turntable ladder were put into service, which now strengthen the Unna fire department team. These vehicles, which were handed over by the mayor, are available at the CKU Mitte and CKU West hospital locations.

The emergency medical vehicles are equipped with the latest technology, including ECG machines, defibrillators and ventilators, to provide quick and effective help in an emergency. The two identical vehicles are used in the “Rendezvous” system together with an ambulance and are therefore optimally positioned to be able to react quickly in emergencies.

Challenges in everyday fire service life

The fire brigade in Germany has a total of 48,100 units, with the volunteer fire brigades making up over a million members. The challenges for these helpers have continually grown. In 2022, the fire department went on around 229,000 missions to put out fires, rescue people and provide technical assistance. However, not all that glitters is gold: the number of attacks and acts of violence against firefighters has risen alarmingly, with 687 registered incidents in 2023. In Unna, too, the helpers depend on society to stand behind them and value their work.

The recent purchases of vehicles and the support from the Sparkasse are a clear sign that the fire service in Unna also has a good hand in meeting the rapidly changing requirements. By supporting the youth fire department and strengthening the vehicle fleet, the city is sending a positive signal for the future of firefighting and rescue in the region.
