Ratskeller closes: Greens are planning a new cultural club for Munich's young people!

The Ratskeller in Munich will close at the end of the year. Landlord Peter Wieser is retiring after many years, and an era is coming to an end. But what comes next? The city council is now faced with the question: What happens next with the premises? The city council faction of the Greens and Pink List does not want to accept this uncertainty and has put an exciting proposal on the table.

The focus is on the idea of using the Ratskeller as a municipal club or cultural space until the planned general renovation of the town hall in 2032. A corresponding application to develop a usage concept is being prepared in collaboration with the “Moderation of the Night” (MoNa) department. The goal is clear: to create a creative space for young people in the city that not only serves commercial but also charitable interests. Clara Nitsche from the Green Party emphasizes: “There needs to be more space for young people in Munich!”, while the vaults of the approximately 150-year-old house are also ideal for parties, concerts and non-commercial events.

Political positions on the new concept

The discussion about future use is already in full swing. Manuel Pretzl from the CSU and the Free Voters is in favor of gastronomic use and would like the Ratskeller to remain an inn. Although he sees a club as better than empty space, he is skeptical about whether exclusive use during the night (e.g. for parties) makes sense. The SPD, on the other hand, is fundamentally against the suggestion of a club and would first like to find a new host. SPD parliamentary group leader Anne Hübner emphasizes that the search for alternatives should only be discussed after a failed gastronomic concept.

A yes or no still seems to be an open question at the moment, but one thing is clear: the vacancy of the listed vault, which threatens to be avoided without a new use, should urgently be avoided. The city could thereby close a valuable gap in Munich's club and cultural landscape.

KulturRaum Munich as an example

Cultural participation is not just a slogan for the Greens, but a central concern of numerous initiatives in Munich. That's how he sits down too Munich Cultural Space ensure that culture is accessible to everyone. Whether by arranging donated tickets for people with low incomes or through our own offers to get involved, work is being done here to help shape the city's culture.

On October 15th, a special campaign took place as part of this initiative: wish hearts for the KulturWunschBaum were made with the aim of formulating personal wishes for the culture. Actions like this could be continued in a new location like the Ratskeller in order to give space to Munich's cultural diversity.

So it remains exciting to see what turns the discussion surrounding the Ratskeller will take. One thing is certain: the people of Munich are keeping an eye on developments and will definitely get involved in the discussions. The signs are good for a lively cultural life in the former Ratskeller vaults - if the city decides together and quickly on a solution.
