What does the future look like? In order to get to the bottom of this question, the Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) is conducting foresight studies. The Foresight process, conducted from 2019 to 2023, examines technological and social changes and develops scenarios for the 2030s. These don't just look at what is known, but try to take a broader look at the development of society and technology.
Future scenarios and key technologies
The aim of the foresight initiatives is to provide citizens and political decision-makers with a better understanding of technical and social developments. In recent years, 112 trends have been identified that could play a role in the coming years. Some of the focal points are the future of values in Germany, the meeting of biology and technology and the issues surrounding trust in digital worlds.
Also exciting is the emerging task of a purpose economy, which could represent a new model for the future. Technical support comes from the Future Office, which filters out relevant trends in workshops and by analyzing international studies. History can serve as a teacher here, as the BMFTR used Delphi studies as early as the 1990s to identify social challenges.
