Subway expansion in Munich: Milestone reached for the U5 to Pasing!

A lot is happening in the west of Munich: Construction work to extend the U5 subway line is progressing quickly and has reached an important milestone. On Gotthardstrasse, work on the diaphragm walls has been completed as planned, which represents significant progress in cover construction. Large construction machines have now left the construction site, providing a welcome reduction in noise. The tunnel cover is now being concreted so that the work can move on to the next phase. How tz.de Reportedly, an impressive 66,000 tons of concrete have already been used for the entire project.

The new diaphragm walls are around 1.20 meters wide and reach a depth of around 30 meters. These huge structures form a statically solid outer skin of the subway structure and are crucial for the stability of the structure. Construction work also continues on the route between Laimer Platz and the future “Baumschule Laim” subway stop, where bored piles for culvert shafts are being placed every 100 meters. Groundwater balancing is essential, and the culvert shafts play a central role in this.

Transport infrastructure and other work

A look at the construction site shows that temporary bridges have already been built over existing pedestrian and cycle path underpasses at Pasinger train station. To ensure that all travelers get through safely, the underpasses at Pasinger train station remain open at all times. In order to continue to maintain traffic on Josef-Felder-Straße, a new roadway will be constructed. Work is expected to begin in the fall. Traffic is routed in one lane on both sides.

In construction lot 1, the construction department plans to complete all cover concreting by April 2026. This will be followed by complete excavation of the ground and the construction of the tunnel base before the expansion of the subway system is further advanced. The city of Munich has big plans for the entire transport infrastructure: the expansion of local public transport should cover around 30 percent of the journeys traveled by 2030. This also includes the intensive planning for the extension of the U5 to Freiham as well as the U9 relief bridge through the city center, such as City of Munich communicates.
