Munich under the sign of the medal: World Exhibition Our Myths opens!
Today Munich is a vibrant place of art and culture, as the Bavarian capital is the venue for the world exhibition of modern medal art for the first time. The exhibition under the motto “Our Myths, Our Roots” takes place in the impressive antique collections at Königsplatz. Art medals are presented here that hover between classic and modern expressions of this tradition that goes back over 500 years. Medal art has its origins in the Italian Renaissance, with Albrecht Dürer as one of its most famous representatives.
The event is organized by the Munich State Coin Collection and the Fédération Internationale de la Médaille d’Art, under the patronage of H.K.H. Duke Franz of Bavaria. “This is a very special occasion for all art lovers,” says a representative of the coin collection. “We show works that come not only from Europe, but also from Asia, Oceania and America.” Many of the pieces presented are award-winning and impress with their deeper message.
A look at medal art
Medals are usually designed on two sides. The motif is emblazoned on the main page, while the back often functions as a comment. German and US medal art in particular is often dedicated to political themes. In the Netherlands and Latvia, avant-garde small sculptures are very popular, while Japan and New Zealand show a particular sensitivity to indigenous traditions.
A look at the exhibition's supporting program reveals that the main exhibition is supplemented by a lecture program by medal experts and workshops for artists. “This not only promotes creativity, but also the exchange between the artists,” said a spokesman State coin collection.
Planned events and activities
The world exhibition is accompanied by various events, including the general meeting of the German Society for Medal Art (DGMK) on October 14, 2025. Board elections will also take place on this occasion. The meeting is followed by a pre-medal fair, which is another highlight for those interested.
“We have put together a great program for the entire week,” says one organizer happily. In addition to the FIDEM exhibition, there will also be a special edition entitled “Resonances” by the DGMK and a presentation under the motto “With collector’s eyes: The most beautiful medal”.
Not to be forgotten is the awarding of the Johann Veit Döll German Medalist Prize on October 17th, which is an additional incentive for many artists to submit their best works.
Overall, the World Exhibition in Munich offers an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in the fascinating world of medal art. Whether you are an art lover or simply interested in the historical roots of medals, this event is a real experience. Access to these treasures of medal art is not only a delight for the eyes, but also a deeper exploration of our cultural roots.
