Smoking at stops? Stadtwerke Augsburg start a consideration campaign!
Stadtwerke Augsburg (swa) is committed to more consideration at stops and is launching a brand new information campaign against smoking. Due to numerous complaints from passengers who complained about the smoke at stops, the focus is now on respectful behavior on public transport and at stops. Managing director Rainer Nauerz emphasizes that the majority of passengers are considerate, but there is a need for action.
In many cities in Germany there are already non-smoker protection laws that protect non-smokers from passive smoking (see also Wikipedia ). However, due to public reasons, smoking bans cannot be imposed at most stops. An exception, however, is Königsplatz, where the municipal utilities have house rights and can issue eviction notices. Ashtrays and signs have been set up there since 2013 to remind people that the Kö is smoke-free.
Respectful treatment and clear communication
The swa is now planning to make the existing information elements such as signs and posters clearer. The message “Thank you for not smoking here” is posted in the stops, and announcements on buses and trams are also made to remind passengers not to smoke. In total, similar notices will be posted at 407 stops with passenger shelters. These measures are part of a comprehensive strategy to raise awareness about not smoking.
A special ambassador for the campaign is the robot “Swally”, which acts as a friendly reminder not to smoke and will be present at Königsplatz in the coming weeks. This clever and modern form of advertising is intended to raise awareness among smokers and encourage them to keep their distance and be considerate of non-smokers.
A step in the right direction
The Augsburg public utilities do important work to protect non-smokers. While non-smoking protection laws in Germany have made some progress, the country ranks last among 36 European countries in the “European Tobacco Control Scale 2019” (see also Wikipedia ). The German Cancer Congress and the “Association of European Cancer Leagues” are calling for stronger measures against smoking in order to protect children and young people in particular.
The new information campaign by Stadtwerke Augsburg is therefore a significant step towards a smoke-free environment at stops and, if well received, can also have positive effects on the entire cityscape and the health of its citizens. The road to a smoke-free future is still a long one, but with initiatives like this the air becomes a little clearer for everyone.
