Cycling rally inspires thousands: a highlight for Munich!
On Sunday, April 21, 2025, Munich experienced a hustle and bustle as the General German Bicycle Club (ADFC) cycling rally rolled across the city. More than 16,000 cyclists took part in the demonstration, which significantly exceeded the organizers' expectations. With an inviting motto: “Five years of the Munich cycling decision: Where are our cycle paths?”, the participants expressed their dissatisfaction with the lack of progress in the implementation of cycle paths. At Süddeutsche the event was described as extremely colorful and creative.
The route was anything but ordinary. The ADFC organized a total length of 800 kilometers and mobilized 15 bicycle demonstration trains from the entire region to Munich, all of which started at 12:15 p.m. A particular highlight of the trip was the 3-kilometer stretch on the A95 motorway, which was a unique experience for some participants. “The event takes place whatever the weather,” said the organizers, who ensured that 300 volunteers ensured everything ran smoothly.
A celebration for the whole family
As reported by Lora, families with children flocked to the event at the various starting points. With colorful signs and in casual clothing, the cyclists gathered in Obersendling and later moved to Königsplatz for the big rally starting at around 3:30 p.m. Kathrin Gerle also attracted attention: she had attached a bubble machine to her luggage rack to bring joy to cyclists both young and old.
However, the mood wasn't all happy. The cycling rally also had a serious undertone and was a clear reminder for more safety in traffic. While all participants shared a love of cycling, some self-painted signs showed their demands for better bike paths and safe infrastructure. With a converted Bonanza bike that was equipped with an electric drive, Klaus stood out from the crowd; Together with his family he celebrated the freedom of cycling.
Amazing numbers and safety precautions
At around 4 p.m. the police estimated the number of participants at 5,500, which was quickly described as unrealistic because the organizers reported a record number of 16,000 participants at 4:45 p.m. This discrepancy not only underlines the great interest in the cycling rally, but also shows how important the voice of cyclists is in the city. The security precautions were not negligible; 650 police officers and volunteer firefighters secured the event and provided the necessary protection.
For everyone who missed the event or would like to find out more about the cycling movement, there will soon be a summary of the cycling tour in Gerys and Tary's Favorites, as Lora reported. The first part of the summary will be broadcast on Monday, June 23, 2025 at 4:00 p.m. on FM and on the Internet live stream. The follow-up reporting offers the opportunity to review the best moments of the cycling tour.
The ADFC continues to call for progress in the implementation of the planned cycle paths. The great demand and the diverse participation show that it is necessary to take the voices of cyclists seriously. Although the event was a great success, the question remains: How long do we have to wait for safe and well-developed cycle paths?
