Berg am Laim: Greens demand an upgrade of the littered tram stop!
In Berg am Laim, the St.-Veit-Platz tram stop has mutated into the proverbial “lost place”. With a dilapidated kiosk, unsightly piles of rubbish and rusty bicycles on the sides, this place has clearly seen better days. The Greens in Munich have set their sights on upgrading this stop and are calling for concrete measures to beautify and revitalize it.
How tz.de reported, the Greens' demand includes some practical suggestions. Temporary raised beds or trees in troughs would be a welcome change in the streetscape, supplemented by partially unsealing the area and creating a flower strip. Seating is also on the wish list to make the stay more pleasant for passers-by. The Greens would like to revive the dilapidated kiosk, whose structural condition also leaves something to be desired, through new lease models, pop-up uses or art projects.
Complicated ownership relationships
However, the situation surrounding the kiosk and the stop is quite complex. The property belongs to the building department, which is also responsible for cleaning, although an external company is commissioned with this task. P&R-GmbH is responsible for removing scrap bicycles, but the kiosk itself is in serious need of renovation and is currently not available for use. Interestingly, the kiosk sales unit does not belong to the Munich Transport Company (MVG), but to the municipal department.
Tram lines and connections
An important point that should not be ignored in the discussion about the St.-Veit-Platz stop is the connection to the public transport network. The transport hub is served by several tram lines, such as the Tram 19, which runs between Pasing train station and Berg am Laim. This line provides an important connection to other parts of the city and brings many passengers through every day.
Furthermore, it leads Tram 18 also close by, making access to the stop even more important. It is clear that a more attractive design of the area would not only promote its aesthetic appearance, but also its use by citizens.
Sustainable urban planning in view
With its sustainable urban planning, Munich is pursuing a goal that goes far beyond the upgrading of individual stops. The focus is on a dense mix of living, working, shopping and leisure. This should not only shorten journeys for citizens, but also counteract traffic and emissions. The city also relies on barrier-free infrastructure to ensure better connections to local public transport, according to information from muenchen.de.
By implementing funding programs, the aim is to create a “Munich mix” that appeals to different population groups. Strategies such as the introduction of climate functions and plans demonstrate that climate protection and sustainable development are increasingly becoming standard in urban planning processes.
Overall, it is exciting to see how the St.-Veit-Platz stop could develop if the Greens' initiative comes to fruition. A beautiful, inviting square could be created here, which not only contributes to the redesign of the streetscape, but also significantly improves the feeling of life in Berg am Laim.
