HSV before horror defeat: Every goal counts in Munich!

Today, September 13, 2025, Hamburger SV is once again faced with a mammoth task. In the Allianz Arena, HSV meets the undisputed top dog FC Bayern Munich, and the history could hardly be darker. The Hamburgers bring with them a horror record that makes the fans sweat.

Since HSV's last point win in Munich, a 2-2 draw on August 15, 2008, the tide has turned: in nine games, HSV only scored three goals while conceding a whopping 51 goals. Rafael van der Vaart, once captain of Hamburg, made it clear what would be acceptable to him: “Anything under five goals conceded would be good in my opinion.” This statement impressively sums up the precarious situation, as the last eight meetings in Munich were anything but pleasant.

Losing encounters

The balance speaks volumes: nine of the last ten duels against Bayern were lost. The last eight games in Munich are particularly worrying, where HSV only scored a measly three goals and conceded 50 goals in return. Five of the last games are among the worst defeats in the club's history, including the disastrous 0:8 in the 2014/15 season and the same result in the 2016/17 season. Anyone who looks at the last encounters will get goosebumps:

  • 2010: 0:1 – Eine milde Niederlage.
  • 2011: 0:5 – Null Torchancen für den HSV.
  • 2012: 2:5 – Bayern führt zur Halbzeit 5:0.
  • 2013/2014: 1:3 – Letzter Treffer des HSV in München durch Pierre-Michel Lasogga.
  • 2014/2015: 0:8 – Bayern mit 25 Torschüssen, das war ein wahres Debakel.
  • 2015/2016: 1:5 – Defensive Taktik bricht nach der Halbzeit zusammen.
  • 2017: 0:6 – Bayern führt nach 19 Minuten 3:0, Robert Lewandowski erzielt drei Tore.

Current challenge

The situation is critical given the last derby defeat against FC St. Pauli. HSV will be under pressure, but they are trying to bring a breath of fresh air into the midfield with two last-minute transfers from the Premier League. It remains to be seen whether that will be enough to survive against Bayern. The value of the FC Bayern squad is an impressive 905.15 million euros, while HSV is left behind with 108.15 million euros.

At the last appearance in Munich, in March 2018, players like Filip Kostić and Walace were still on the pitch, while Bayern stars Franck Ribéry and Arjen Robben shone. Today, Joshua Kimmich and Sven Ulreich are the ones playing for Bayern, while Bakery Jatta is Hamburg's hope.

The question remains: Can HSV finally turn things around with courage and determination? The demands are clear, but the reality of many years tells a different story. An exciting duel is coming up and, as we all know, anything can happen in football. It remains to be seen whether HSV can share points or even win against the giants Bayern.
