Theater Peace in Freedom”: Commemoration of 80 years of the end of the war in Munich!
There will be a very special event in Munich on November 9th, 2025. Under the title “Theater Peace in Freedom – 80 Years of the End of the War” it will be held from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the Guardini90 a play reading will take place that deals with the effects of the Second World War. This event focuses primarily on the end of the war in Europe on May 8, 1945 and invites you to learn more about the turbulent time after the war. Visitors can look forward to an impressive reading by actors such as Markus Schmalzl, Georg Schulz, Verena Eckardt and the swing acrobats.
The event deals with the destruction of Munich and the social reality at the time: American tanks, looting and the black market shaped the image of the city after the war. The beginning of a new era of peace, freedom and democracy in Germany will also be highlighted, a topic that will be honored on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the end of the war.
A broader context
But the event is only part of the extensive “Zero Hour?” program, which examines the profound changes in Munich after National Socialism. In this context, over 220 events will be offered from January to May 2025, which include readings, lectures, exhibitions and a variety of art activities. With 130 partner institutions, the program also wants to address the topics of memory, repression and ideology and show how Munich deals with its own history. Around two thirds of the offers are free, which opens up access for everyone. More information about the program and registration is available on the website Public History Munich available.
Dealing with the past in post-war Germany was anything but easy. A look at history shows that denazification was at least somewhat successful, but many National Socialists remained unpunished. The diversity of political currents and the different policies of the four occupation zones, as reflected in the Planet knowledge described laid the foundation for the later Cold War and the division of Germany. The political unification of the western zones in 1948 and the introduction of the German mark created new economic conditions that led to the revival of retail trade.
The challenges that arose from this period are still relevant today. Discussions about totalitarian legacies and the development of a stable democracy are more important than ever. The “Theater Peace in Freedom” event therefore not only offers entertainment, but also encourages people to think about their own history and its influence on the present.
Visitors to the event should register in good time as entry is free but places are limited. Further information about registration is available on the website MVHS (Course: V124150).
