Miners challenge themselves: use opportunities for the playoff dream!
The Peißenberg Miners are facing a crucial phase in the current ice hockey season. After two narrow home defeats against Geretsried (2:3) and Landsberg (4:5), the Miners finally have to take the necessary steps to take advantage of their chances and make up ground in terms of points. Coach Andreas Becher is convinced that his team is often the better, but fails due to implementation. “We often wait for the perfect option instead of completing it straight away,” explains Becher. The Miners have had over 24 power plays in the last five games, but have only scored a measly three goals, which equates to a success rate of just 12.5% - a figure that claims last place in the league.
The last home game against Landsberg attracted a remarkable 1,600 spectators, who experienced a high quality of play despite the defeat. “The support of the fans is priceless,” said Becher, who at the same time warned that his players often shy away from making final decisions. According to him, the 2-on-1 and 3-on-2 situations, which were not used optimally, had a decisive influence on past games.
A look at the upcoming games
The Miners have two important games on the schedule for the coming weekend. On Friday they face the bottom of the table, ESV Burgau, and Becher emphasizes that the team has to be careful, especially in their strong first third. The undefeated league leaders EHC Königsbrunn await on Sunday. "Every team knows that they always have a chance. We have to finally translate our quality of play into results," Becher calls on his team.
After five matchdays, the Miners are currently in ninth place in the table with six points. The season's goal - direct qualification for the playoffs - is being seriously pursued, after all we were only missing one point last year. The next matches could be crucial to how the rest of the season goes.
New strategies for the power play
In order to improve the weak power play statistics, Becher is planning a new variant in the power play. Many hits on the post and crossbar in the last few games give hope for a positive change, even if the team is currently struggling to finish. “A quick game and fewer passes are necessary in order to exploit opportunities more efficiently,” Becher encourages his players.
The anticipation among the fans is great, and with over 1,000 spectators per home game, the atmosphere is always electric. “We know that we need the support of our fans in order to be successful together,” sums up Becher, and hopes for a turn of events in the next games.
