Massive subway closures in Munich: This is what passengers need to know!
Traveling on the Munich subway will be anything but comfortable in the next few weeks. From Friday, October 24th, 2025, comprehensive renovation work will begin at the Theresienstrasse subway station in the city, which is expected to last until December 1st, 2025. During this time, the walls of the station will be completely renovated, which will demand a lot not only from the passengers, but also from the entire rail network. Loud tz The U2 lines between the main station and Josephsplatz will be interrupted for six weekends.
How is the timetable staggered during the renovation period? The closures begin on Friday at 10:30 p.m. and run until closing time on Sunday. The U2 will run in two separate sections: The first section runs from Feldmoching via Scheidplatz to Josephsplatz, while the second section runs from Messestadt Ost via Sendlinger Tor to the main station. The MVG has created a bypass option for everyone who wants to travel between the closed train stations: affected passengers can bridge the area between Scheidplatz and Sendlinger Tor with the U3. You can also switch to tram lines 27 and 28, which will only run between the main train station and Neuperlach center on the affected Saturdays.
Restrictions on Lindwurmstrasse
It's not just the subway that's affected. Lindwurmstrasse is also struggling with traffic restrictions, which have been active here since mid-March 2024 and are expected to last until August 2028. From Monday, October 20th, the underpass on Lindwurmstrasse will be completely closed to all types of traffic - including pedestrians and cyclists. Munich.de informed that during the closure a free shuttle bus for pedestrians will be set up, which will run between the Poccistraße and Linwurmstraße stops.
For cyclists there is a detour via Bavariastrasse. Drivers are asked to take a large bypass via Isartalstrasse or Garmischer Strasse. A reopening of the underpass for pedestrians and cyclists as well as out of town for vehicle traffic is planned for mid-December 2025, but there will initially be closures for a further two weeks due to rework.
The construction site situation in Munich
The current construction situation in the city is extensive and always changing. The service card from Munich on the way not only shows the current construction sites, but also upcoming measures and temporary stopping bans. The focus is particularly on the city center and the main roads. If you would like to have an overview of the various restrictions in the coming weeks, you will find detailed information about their expected duration and can easily view the measures.
Future construction phases and their impact on traffic will be continually updated here. Although the Mobility Department endeavors to provide accurate reporting, it does not guarantee the accuracy or completeness of the information.
With these massive restrictions, it is clear that the people of Munich should be a little patient over the next few weeks. But investments in infrastructure are a necessary evil to make the city fit for the future. Stay informed and follow the MVG's instructions for smooth progress!
