Asbestos removal in Düsseldorf's subway: Nordstrasse construction site starts!
On Monday, July 14, 2025, the urgently needed asbestos removal work will begin in the Düsseldorf Nordstrasse subway station. This step became necessary after construction work in May 2025 discovered over 40-year-old lighting panels that were identified as asbestos. The stop was then closed in order to keep the danger to workers and residents as low as possible. The renovation work is expected to last until the end of the year, as tixio.de reports.
For the duration of the renovation, a so-called black area will be set up, which will be equipped with locks to prevent asbestos fibers from escaping. Everything happens under strict safety and environmental protection requirements in order to minimize the risk for everyone involved. This also includes accompanying air measurements, which are carried out by a specialist laboratory. This makes it possible to ensure that the health of the workers as well as that of residents and passengers is not endangered, as t-online.de states.
What happens next for the passengers?
The U78 and U79 subway lines can pass through the Nordstrasse stop at reduced speed during the work. However, passengers are asked to use the neighboring stops Heinrich-Heine-Allee and ERGO-Platz/Klever Straße instead. There are no restrictions for the above-ground tram lines 701 and 705, so they can continue to run as usual. The city of Düsseldorf has already taken all the necessary measures to regulate the air flow on the construction site and filter the exhaust air in order to avoid health risks.
The asbestos removal work will be carried out in several phases, with each phase taking approximately three to five weeks. First, all affected ceiling elements will be removed, followed by a thorough cleaning of the stop, which covers an area of around 6,500 square meters. Samples are taken to confirm that all asbestos fibers have been completely removed; if not, the process must be repeated - an important measure that is adhered to in accordance with the specifications of the Technical Rules for Hazardous Substances 519 (TRGS 519) and other legal regulations, as can be found on energie-Experten.org.
Safe execution of the work
To carry out this renovation work, the city only commissions qualified specialist companies that have the necessary know-how, the appropriate technology and the approvals from the responsible authorities. This is the only way to ensure that the work is carried out properly and safely. Workers are strictly required to wear protective equipment to protect themselves from possible hazards. All necessary measures will be taken to ensure a safe and successful renovation.
With this project, the city of Düsseldorf not only stands for the protection of health, but also for the further modernization of the Nordstrasse stop, which is to be tackled following the asbestos removal. This not only makes the stop safer, but also more modern, which means a significant improvement for all passengers. Stay tuned for more information on the progress of the renovation.
