Construction site chaos in Munich: Pentecost without S-Bahn and Bernhardibus!
The Pentecost holidays are just around the corner and not only bring with them a holiday atmosphere, but also numerous construction sites in the greater Munich area. Traffic chaos is expected in the coming days as there is a lot of work going on both on the rails and on the roads. Fewer commuters and students are using the transport connection this week, but everyday life is still a challenge for many.
How BR reported, the S-Bahn main line will be closed for construction work on the night of Friday to Saturday from 10:30 p.m. until June 13th. The focus is on the Ostbahnhof. Anyone who relies on the S-Bahn lines S2 and S3 can at least look forward to a 10-minute service - but the other lines such as S6, S8, S4 and S1 end in Pasing, Heimeranplatz or Hauptbahnhof. A replacement bus service will be set up that will run between Isartor and Ostbahnhof every 5 minutes. On the outer branches in the east, passengers must expect a service time of 20 minutes.
Traffic disruptions in the city
Munich's streetscape will also be characterized by construction sites. The renovation work on the Middle Ring is divided into two phases. The first phase starts on Friday at 8 p.m. and runs until Tuesday, June 10, at 6 a.m. Here traffic will be reduced to one lane, which can cause significant delays as some on- and off-ramps will be closed. This will be followed by the second phase, which will last from June 13th, 6 p.m. until probably June 16th, 6 a.m. Here too, drivers must expect restrictions. In addition, Chiemgaustrasse will be completely closed on a certain section.
Munich's infrastructure does not only require short-term measures, because the city has a lot planned. Loud Evening newspaper MVG boss Ingo Wortmann plans to bundle more construction measures in the future in order to increase efficiency. There are currently over 50 renovation works taking place on the U3 and U6 subway lines. The sections in Giesing, Fröttmaning and the area around the Maxmonument are particularly affected.
Buses replace trains
The construction sites also have an impact on bus traffic. Tram 16 will be replaced by buses in the Isartor – Effnerplatz section, while trams 19/21 will be rerouted via Sendlinger Tor/Isartor. Affected passengers should note that tram 27/28 in the Karlsplatz (Stachus) – Kurfürstenplatz section will also be replaced by buses. In order to cope with the changes in the timetable, we recommend taking a look at the online connection information.
The upcoming construction work is a clear indication that Munich will need a comprehensive infrastructure upgrade in the coming years. While the construction sites are often annoying, they help ensure that our city's transport infrastructure remains sustainable. Given the seasonal frequency of travelers, the Whitsun holidays are a suitable time to counteract possible traffic chaos over a longer period of time.
So stay patient, encourage the use of buses and trams, and check connections regularly. This is the only way you can get through the next time with less stress! The coming days in Munich will not only be packed with construction sites, but also with a fair amount of understanding and flexibility that each of us will have to show.
