Arson attacks in Munich: Police investigate extremist jihad!

In recent years, a worrying series of fires in the greater Munich area has kept not only citizens but also the security authorities on tenterhooks. Arson attacks occur again and again and are now even being discussed as part of possible hybrid warfare. According to the South German newspaper Up to 50 arson attacks have been carried out in the last six years, causing a total of almost 25 million euros in damage.

On Monday morning, July 7, 2025, two forestry machines burned in Brunnthal, including a harvester whose new price is 650,000 euros. The fire department and state security were immediately alerted. Here, too, there was fortunately no material damage amounting to several hundred thousand euros and there were no injuries. These attacks are part of a worrying series that has been going on since spring 2023 and runs into the millions. Similar incidents have occurred in recent days, for example in Forstenrieder Park and Perlacher Forest Evening newspaper reported.

Investigations and arrests

The police have now set up two investigation teams and offered a reward of 10,000 euros for information. Despite at least two arrests, identifying the main perpetrators remains a major problem. The Bavarian Office for the Protection of the Constitution is monitoring the series of fires, but cannot actively intervene in the investigation. The Mercury reports that two suspects were arrested who have no fixed address and are also in custody for other crimes. The suspects are initially suspected of being involved in several arson attacks.

The investigators believe that a left-wing extremist background is behind the arson, even if there are no current letters of responsibility. So far, Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) has spoken of “terrorist principles” and Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) has described the attacks as an “attack on our democracy”.

criticism and concern

The situation remains tense as investigations are underway in all directions. According to the Munich Public Prosecutor's Office, there is a strict focus on possible connections between the fire cases. More than 15 relevant cases have been treated since May 2023 and coordination among the various police departments has been intensified.

An example that underlines the drama of this series is the fire of 23 cars belonging to the Munich police dog squad in January 2025. Such incidents raise fears and present the police with enormous challenges. Whether the arrested suspects can provide much-needed answers remains to be seen.

The citizens of Munich are called upon to be vigilant and to report any suspicions immediately in order to prevent further damage and stop the spiral of violence.
