Storm alert! Thunderstorms and hail are threatening Munich today!
A turbulent, thundery evening is looming in Munich, which not only directly affects the weather, but also the DFB international match between Germany and Portugal. The German Weather Service (DWD) is already warning of an extreme risk of severe weather: warm, humid air from the Bay of Biscay meets a cold front that could lead to violent thunderstorms, heavy rain and hail. Temperatures could even reach up to 27 degrees, which will further heat up the humid air. A whole spectrum of weather phenomena is expected towards the evening, which could jeopardize the kick-off at 9 p.m.
The DWD's forecasts are not entirely consistent: While one model assumes that the storm could subside around 8 p.m., another expects it to last until 10 p.m. The focus is particularly on the areas between Swabia and the Bavarian Forest, where the highest severe weather warning level 4 (extreme storm) has been declared for the coming hours. The DWD is specifically talking about hailstones with diameters between 5 and 10 cm, as well as heavy rain at certain locations that could reach up to 30 liters per square meter.

Timon Staeger from the ARD Weather Competence Center explained that the mixture of the warm air masses and the incoming cold front will lead to violent updrafts. This weather situation is typical for the region and can lead to unpredictable weather fluctuations. Increased showers with squalls and small-grain hail are expected, especially in the afternoon and evening. The first signs of weather appear during the day and are expected to subside again in the first half of the night.
Looking into the weather future
According to forecasts, Thursday will bring a calmer weather situation - rain is on the agenda in particular, while thunderstorm activity subsides. Nevertheless, individual showers are still expected in Bavaria, which can also be heavier. This again shows a good knack for dealing with the changing weather conditions, because the outdoor pool season could pick up again on Friday, provided that the weather changes cooperate.
It remains to be seen whether the DFB international match can take place or not. The Allianz Arena could possibly even be spared if the storm moves north around Fröttmaning. However, a successful final party for the fans looks different. It's an exciting day for Munich with a lot of weather drama - maybe a little too exciting?
