New cultural center on Candidplatz: strengthening art and neighborhood!

The Untergiesing-Harlaching district committee has set itself an ambitious goal: a new cultural center on Candidplatz. This was decided at a recent meeting to strengthen art initiatives and the neighborhood community in the area. There is a certain degree of foresight in the idea, because the neighbors envy the residents for the historic cultural center “Giesinger Bahnhof”, which was built in 1898 and is now a listed building. However, many residents of Untergiesinger struggle with access to the Giesinger train station. An additional district cultural center is intended to remedy this, as there is currently no such offer in Untergiesing or Harlaching.

The planned cultural center on Candidplatz could become an accessible place where a variety of events will take place. These include photo exhibitions, dance events for children and adults as well as regular game afternoons. Such low-threshold offers are ideal for promoting social interaction in the district. The concept is to offer a public cultural program that strengthens the community and increases the quality of life of the neighbors.

Candidplatz as an ideal location

Candidplatz has emerged as a central and easily accessible location. The cultural center could be seamlessly integrated, especially with the current plans for the development of urban areas in the area. Consideration is also being given to operating the cultural center as a branch of the Giesinger train station. The Giesinger Bahnhof sponsoring association has experience in district-related cultural work and could therefore make a valuable contribution.

As already mentioned, Giesinger Bahnhof is a cultural attraction, but also has its challenges when it comes to accessibility. It offers two event rooms and several smaller seminar rooms on the first floor, which can only be reached via stairs. However, barrier-free access is possible from the rear of the building, which can be an advantage in many situations.

Important for all visitors

The Giesinger train station itself is now well equipped to take different needs into account. The offers include a pick-up service from the next stop, a wheelchair-accessible toilet and barrier-free access to the restaurant during opening hours. The main entrance has some challenges such as thresholds, but offers plenty of space for visitors.

The planned cultural center on Candidplatz could create a place for encounters and creativity that not only benefits artists, but also the entire neighborhood. If the district committee continues to stick to this plan, a place could be created in the near future that will make the hearts of the people of Untergiesing beat faster.
