Renovation plans for Säbener Platz: More safety for all users!
Resident Anneke Steinmüller is passionate about redesigning Säbener Platz in Munich. This square connects the city with the idyllic Perlacher Forest and is equally popular with joggers, hikers, dog walkers, families and cyclists. At a recent citizens' meeting, Steinmüller presented a draft that was met with great approval. The aim of the redesign is to do justice to all user groups and to avoid conflicts that arise due to the busy tarred stretch between Säbener Platz and Oberhaching. This particularly attracts racing cyclists, which, according to Steinmüller, leads to dangerous situations for children who cycle there.
In order to meet these challenges, Steinmüller suggests developing additional paths next to the race track. These are intended to create safe areas for slow cyclists, pedestrians, joggers and dog owners. Floor markings are also being discussed to improve the traffic situation. A significant change would be that Oberbiberger Straße turns onto Säbener earlier. This could create a space that meets everyone's needs.
Planned facilities
The ideas for the newly designed Säbener Platz go beyond mere paths. Steinmüller is planning tables, a toilet and a service center with an electric charging station and a defibrillator. In addition, WiFi and a drinks machine could round off the offer. The number of cyclists visiting the forest is currently not recorded, which, according to the state forestry department, is due to a lack of counts. But the interest in sustainable mobility is obvious.
The importance of urban planning for sustainable mobility is becoming increasingly important, especially due to the challenge of climate change and air pollution. Innovative concepts to promote cycling are essential. Cycling is not only environmentally friendly, but also has positive effects on personal health and quality of life. In this context, bicycle infrastructure is increasingly becoming a key to improving urban quality of life. Last but not least, cities like Copenhagen and Amsterdam serve as role models for bike-friendly infrastructure.
Säbener Platz in detail
Säbener Platz is located at the end of Säbener Strasse in Harlaching, at the intersection with Oberbiberger Strasse and Heigelstrasse. It is designated as a bicycle route and is around 100 meters long. The square, named after the Säben monastery in South Tyrol, was given this name in 1922 and has experienced various usage trends over the years. It is currently very popular with pedestrians and cyclists alike.
Anneke Steinmüller's vision and the planned renovations could give the square a completely new functionality. It remains to be hoped that the ideas can soon be turned into reality and that Säbener Platz will become a model for livable and sustainable urban design in Munich. Citizen participation plays a crucial role and increases awareness of the importance of cycling in our urban environment.
