IAA Mobility 2025: Munich will become a mobility mecca!

It's that time again! The IAA Mobility, the popular international automobile exhibition, opens its doors in Munich from September 9th to 14th, 2023. This renowned trade fair has given itself a new name and is being held under the motto “It’s all about mobility”. It's not just about cars, but about all facets of mobility that will shape our future. This year the organizers expect a lot of interest: Loud Evening newspaper A third more exhibitors have registered, which increases the anticipation for this event even more.

Two main locations are planned for the IAA Mobility: The Summit in the Riem exhibition center, which is aimed primarily at trade visitors, and the Open Space in the city center, which is accessible to everyone and takes place, among other things, in the central squares of Munich. The open space is accompanied by many free activities, including discussion forums and concerts. Here visitors can also take a look at innovative means of transport, from electric cars to bicycles.

A diverse program awaits

The IAA will not only be a stronghold for cars, but also a place for interesting discussions and cultural highlights. The “Citizen Lab” will take place on Marienplatz, used as a discussion forum, where residents and interested parties can talk about topics such as cycle path expansion and e-mobility. Former Formula 1 star Sebastian Vettel will also give a talk about alternative fuels and bicycles at the victory gate.

For music lovers, there are free concerts with artists like Kaled and Thaler during the trade fair at the Siegestor. Local talented young artists will also have the opportunity to perform on stage. Also innovative is the “Festival of Lights”, which will impress historic buildings with spectacular light shows and ensure atmospheric evenings every day from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Test drives and technological innovations

For those who would like to get behind the wheel themselves, 231 hybrid and electric cars are available for test drives. These can be reserved via the IAA Mobility app or directly at the exhibition stands. However, a test strip for autonomous driving will be set up on the A94 motorway, another milestone in mobility innovation.

Deutsche Bahn will also present itself and build its world of experiences on Königsplatz - including a model of the newest Munich S-Bahn. A highlight for the little ones is the “Family Trail”, which aims to introduce the mobility of tomorrow in a child-friendly way with interactive activities. But there are also special programs for cyclists, including a bicycle test route in the English Garden.

Traffic measures and protests

However, the IAA does not only bring positive things: traffic disruptions in downtown Munich are expected due to the events. Cyclists must be prepared for diversions between August 31st and September 19th, especially around Königsplatz. Bus lines 58, 68, 153 and museum line 100 are also affected. In addition, a protest under the motto #noIAA was announced in Luitpoldpark, with a bicycle demo on September 13th.

Overall, IAA Mobility 2023 offers a great opportunity to discover and discuss the latest trends and technologies in mobility. The excitement and anticipation in Munich is palpable, although in the future there will also be the question of whether the IAA will stay here after 2025. Ultimately, it remains to be seen how mobility will develop in the future and what role Munich can play in this. Stay tuned!
