Danger of drowning increases: Deadly weekend shakes Germany!

It was a tragic weekend for many, especially for relatives grieving the loss of loved ones. At least 15 people drowned in Germany on June 21st and 22nd - this is a worrying sign and is considered one of the deadliest weekends in the last decade. These shocking figures were published by the German Life Saving Society (DLRG), which has already lost at least 411 people in the water in all of 2024. This is an increase of 31 deaths compared to the previous year. The situation was no better in 2023 and 2022 either, so we are talking about a worrying trend here. World reports that 253 people have lost their lives in the water during the current bathing season up to the beginning of May, with 150 drowning between May and the current date alone.

The situation is particularly critical for young men; This group is often disproportionately affected by accidents. The DLRG points out that the dangers in open water - be it lakes, seas or rivers - are completely different than in protected indoor pools. There are currents, temperature differences and other risks lurking here that should not be underestimated. Climate change in particular is cited as a factor in the increasing number of drownings, as water conditions and weather patterns change. DLRG emphasizes that many swimmers overestimate their abilities and often swim too far out.

Risks and safety in the water

So how can you protect yourself from these dangers? Experts strongly recommend that you cool down before swimming in colder water and check your health before jumping. That alone can reduce many risks. In addition, you should get out of the water immediately during thunderstorms and heavy rain, as these weather conditions can be life-threatening. In recent years, some swimmers have also had accidents while trying to stay in the water during thunderstorms. ZDF highlights that there are many unrecognized dangers lurking when swimming in rivers, resulting from currents and boat traffic.

The DLRG has also emphasized that older people with previous illnesses are particularly at risk. Almost every third person who died was over 71 years old. Therefore, it is advisable for this group to consult a doctor before bathing. This is also an appeal to society to create more awareness of the upcoming bathing season. DLRG President Ute Vogt expresses the hope that people will become more informed about safety precautions and thus reduce the number of swimming accidents.

Summary and outlook

In summary, it can be said that the 2024 bathing season has been anything but pleasant so far. With 411 tragic accidents and a rising trend, it's time to take not only your own safety seriously, but that of friends and family members as well. The DLRG recommends swimming especially at guarded swimming areas and paying attention to safety measures. A life jacket can be just as helpful for water sports as avoiding alcohol. ZDF and the DLRG warn urgently – protect yourself and your loved ones!
