Autumn chaos in Munich: S-Bahn is canceled for weekends!
Munich S-Bahn passengers will have to prepare for significant restrictions in S-Bahn traffic from October 10th. The background is extensive infrastructure work that will be carried out by Deutsche Bahn on the S-Bahn network in the coming weeks. Weekends and the autumn holidays, which are often the most wonderful time of the year for Munich residents, are particularly affected. Unfortunately, this fall won't be quite as carefree.
The biggest restrictions will come from October 17th, when the entire main route and the area around Ostbahnhof will be closed for several days. Deutsche Bahn has provided additional information for this phase to help travelers find their way around better.
Changed S-Bahn lines
In the first phase of the construction work, S-Bahn traffic will be severely restricted. Lines S1 to S8 are only operating reduced routes:
However, there is a replacement service for the affected routes: buses run between Pasing and the main train station every 10 minutes. In addition, the S6 and regional trains offer faster alternatives.
Extensive construction sites and projects
The infrastructure work is part of a comprehensive construction project that is running under the project name “Environmental Composite Tube (UVR) at Laim Station”. This UVR will help create a future north-south connection for public transport, pedestrians and cyclists. What is particularly noteworthy is that train services will continue uninterrupted during the construction of the UVR as auxiliary bridges will be installed to support the tracks during construction. These auxiliary bridges are gradually being replaced by the UVR cover, which then carries the load of the tracks. These measures are part of the 2nd S-Bahn main line, which aims to achieve higher capacity and closer frequency in the inner city area with various network-complementary measures.
The plans also include the next major construction site between Pasing and Donnersbergerbrücke, which will take place from October 31st to November 10th. Travelers should be prepared for the fact that only three to four S-Bahn lines will run on the main route during the autumn holidays, supported by replacement buses every five minutes.
For the periods mentioned, passengers are recommended to regularly check online for current connections. There will also be information columns at the replacement stops to provide additional orientation.
Overall, Munich's S-Bahn traffic is under a bad star in autumn, but with the right planning and a little patience, passengers can still manage their journeys. Further details can be found in the announcements tz and the DB Engineering to find.
