CSU nomination: Clemens Baumgärtner wants to rule Munich!
The Munich CSU has found a new source of hope for the upcoming mayoral elections. Clemens Baumgärtner, the former economics officer and Oktoberfest boss, was unanimously nominated as the party's candidate for the local elections on March 8, 2026. With 98 percent of the votes, he received the clear trust of his delegates. That reports weekly paper.
The 48-year-old, who has been rooted in Munich since his birth, wants to assert himself in the coming election against the incumbent mayor Dieter Reiter from the SPD. Reiter, who has been in office since 2014 and is running for a third term, is one of Baumgärtner's strongest opponents. His agenda includes central issues such as security, the economy, traffic, housing and social issues, which he wants to explain in more detail in discussions with citizens.
A varied career
Baumgärtner is not only a lawyer, but also has broad experience as a local politician. After many years as a self-employed lawyer, he was a business consultant for over six years, where, among other things, he was able to bring important events such as the IAA to Munich. In 2022 he was also nominated as the top candidate for the upcoming local elections CSU Germany reported.
His active involvement in local politics dates back to the 1990s, when he became a member of District Committee 18 Untergiesing-Harlaching and chaired it from 2012 to 2020. There he successfully implemented notable projects such as the school expansion of the elementary school on Rotbuchenstrasse.
A clear vision for the future
With new glasses that serve as his trademark, Baumgärtner appears modern and approachable. His advertising campaign features a logo with a capital “B” and a stylized eyewear motif that represents his clear view of things. Josef Schmid, head of the mayor's campaign, emphasizes that Baumgärtner takes the concerns of Munich residents very seriously and wants to find solutions that appeal to all citizens South German newspaper.
During his listening tour, which begins in Sendling, he plans to talk directly to the citizens. His core concerns include not only the economy and transport, but also the unsolved housing problem that has gone unnoticed for the past decade. He criticizes the fact that urban development measures have not created any new apartments.
In order to achieve his goals, Baumgärtner wants to act pragmatically and plans to concentrate fully on the election campaign after his term as economic advisor. A temporary living on his savings may be necessary for him to get closer to his goal of making the CSU the strongest force in the city council.
The election campaign promises to be exciting, because the CSU has recently overtaken the Greens and sees the existing green-red government coalition as its main opponent. A clear focus on Munich-wide challenges, coupled with a strong candidacy, could reopen the door for the CSU to become mayor, after the last time a CSU politician held this office from 1978 to 1984.
