Volunteer activity at the forest cemetery: Design habitats for animals!
The city of Schifferstadt invites all nature-loving citizens to get actively involved in the environment. On September 27th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. a large voluntary campaign will take place in the forest cemetery, during which a sandarium and a “beetle cellar” will be created with active support. This initiative is led by environmental officer Frank Schmitt and climate protection manager Elisa Jung, who are looking for volunteers to help design an area for various animals as part of the local agenda.
The forest cemetery will therefore not only be a place of peace and remembrance, but also a retreat for numerous animal species. Several elements are planned, including stone piles for lizards, a deadwood hedge modeled on similar projects at the Südbahnhof, and the sandarium, which is intended to specifically benefit wild bees and other insects. The “beetle cellar” will be a hole about one meter deep that will be filled with dead wood. If time permits, a wetland habitat for amphibians could even be created, which would further promote the region's biodiversity.
Volunteers wanted
In order to implement these measures, materials and tools are provided by the Schifferstadt public utility company. However, anyone who would like to work should bring work gloves and sturdy shoes with them. The campaign not only offers the opportunity to give nature a hand, it is also an excellent opportunity to meet like-minded people and learn more about the local flora and fauna.
Commitment to climate protection is more important than ever today. Many projects offer volunteers the opportunity to get actively involved, for example through awareness-raising measures that provide information on topics such as recycling and biodiversity. These volunteers have the opportunity to pass on their knowledge and get involved in collecting data to observe ecosystems, which is often of interest to biology or ecology students. Ultimately, such exemplary actions not only make a direct contribution to the environment, but also promote awareness and engagement throughout the community.
