Victor Schefé: From freedom in the GDR to blue eyes in Berlin!
On November 22, 1986, when Victor Schefé gave up his GDR citizenship, a new life began for him on the other side of the Wall. Today, almost 40 years later, the then 19-year-old remembers his departure as his “second birthday”, an overwhelming moment that he had been waiting for for a long time. This moving period of his life is documented in his autobiographical novel“Two or three blue eyes”which covers the artist's experiences up to his first theater premiere in West Berlin in the summer of 1990 and the end of the GDR. In BR.de Schefé, the son of a radio journalist from Rostock, also describes his early distance from the GDR, which was characterized by militaristic lessons, where the “multiplication table with tanks” was one of the strange teaching methods.
Music plays a central role in Schefé's narrative. He immerses readers in the sounds and emotions that surrounded him - from Tina Turner to Eurythmics and Nina Hagen. He not only talks about his childhood and youth, but also about his coming out and his first great love for Mikis from Cyprus. Different time levels are interwoven in the texts, giving the reader the opportunity to delve deeply into their memories.
Insights from Stasi files
A particularly revealing aspect of the novel are the Stasi files on Schefé. These files, including an “operational identity check” entitled “Spektakel,” shed new light on the methods of surveillance and denunciation in the GDR. Schefé also addresses the shocking actions of his own mother - an emotional conflict that is still difficult to understand today.
The novel is much more than just a personal story; it is described as a kind of meditation on freedom in a political and general sense. This multifaceted examination of the past will be presented on November 17th at the Munich Volkstheater, where Schefé, in collaboration with Bayern 2, will read from his work.
