Lidl is planning a new supermarket and living space in Ramersdorf – history remains!

Something is happening in Ramersdorf: Lidl recently acquired several properties in the district and is planning to build a new supermarket on an area of around 5,000 square meters. But citizens will not only be able to shop there in the future. Apartments are also planned that are particularly suitable for seniors and young people. “The town hall sees an opportunity here to create urgently needed living space,” reports Evening newspaper.

On July 16, 2025, the Munich city council set the course for this ambitious project as part of a realization competition. The competition, initiated by the Committee for Urban Planning and Building Regulations, aims to develop a mixed-use building that includes both the new discount store and the apartments. The competition is held together with Lidl.

Preservation of history

Particularly pleasing: A historic farmhouse on the site is to be preserved. It will be integrated into the new buildings and offers a certain nostalgic touch in the midst of the modern development. In addition, care is taken to ensure that the new building fits harmoniously into the listed ensemble “Former Ramersdorf Town Center”. The development facing Innsbrucker Ring should also be designed to be closed in order to block out noise and fine dust, which is particularly important in times of increasing air pollution.

In the area where there was previously a car repair shop, a gaming hall and commercial halls, not only living spaces but also green areas are now being built. “Existing trees will be retained and new green spaces and green facades will be created,” adds the Munich Green Party.

Sustainability in focus

With this plan, the city is taking a big step towards sustainable urban development. Not only is space created for people, but also for nature. Public, green roof areas are planned, some of which will be equipped with solar systems. These measures are part of a growing awareness of the need to use our urban resources responsibly.

"The population in urban areas has been growing steadily since the beginning of the 21st century. Sustainable urban development is essential to survival in order to ensure access to housing, education and mobility for everyone," explains the Federal Agency for Civic Education, pointing to the world population, of which 50% already live in cities, with an increasing trend by 2050.

In order to improve the quality of life in cities, not only structural measures are important, but also social participation and an open ear for the concerns of citizens. Interdisciplinary collaboration is crucial to ensure social sustainability and meet different needs, as shown by studies on sustainable urban development.

The plans for Ramersdorf are all about modern urban development. It remains exciting to see how the implementation of this vision will be accepted by the citizens and what positive impulses it can create for the district.
