Fire alarm in Munich: Attack on AfD office shakes city!

On Monday evening, an attack was carried out on the office of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) in the Perlach district of Munich. According to information from the South German newspaper The incident occurred around 8:20 p.m. when a passer-by noticed an unknown person throwing a burning object through a window into the premises. The witness spoke to the suspect, but he was able to escape before the fire department was alerted.

When the fire brigade arrived, they found smoke developing in the offices, but no flames were seen. The extent of the material damage amounts to a four-digit amount. The state security police have started the investigation and are now urgently looking for witnesses who can provide information about the incident.

Political dimension of the attack

The classification of the incident is assessed differently from different sides. Bavaria's Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) describes the incident as an "arson attack" with terrorist characteristics. Munich's mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) described the attack as an "attack on our democracy" and suspected that the political motive could come from the left-wing extremist spectrum, reports Marker.

The night after the attack was no picnic for the investigators: around 50 police officers intensively searched the area around the scene of the fire to secure possible evidence. However, no suspect was caught. On the positive side, no one was injured during the incident and no service dogs in the area were injured.

History of suspicious fires

In recent years there have been repeated fires in and around Munich that suggest a political background. There was recently a series of arson attacks on police vehicles in the city, with 23 vehicles setting fire to a police station. These incidents were also classified as potentially politically motivated. Reiter emphasizes the urgency of finding the arsonists and holding them accountable.

The Munich police are asking for support from citizens: Anyone who observed anything suspicious in the Perlach district on Monday night or in the days before should report immediately. The investigation is in full swing and every piece of information can be crucial.
