Munich focuses on safety: 100 bicycle streets for cyclists!

A lot is happening in the area of cycling in Munich! As the city administration reports, there are now 100 bicycle streets that enable cyclists in the Isar metropolis to have a safer and more pleasant ride. Mayor Dominik Krause, mobility officer Georg Dunkel and construction officer Dr.-Ing. recently visited. Jeanne-Marie Ehbauer the Wilramstraße, which was set up as a new bicycle street. This measure is primarily intended to increase safety and promote cycling, especially for children and older people.

The first cycle route in Munich was launched in Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt back in 2003, but the city is now racing in the right direction. The introduction of cycle streets offers a cost-effective alternative to structurally separated cycle paths. They are laid out on secondary and residential streets that represent important cycling connections. While cyclists are allowed to ride next to each other on these streets, drivers must be particularly considerate - after all, Wilramstrasse should be a model for safety and comfort.

Important measures and actions

In order to raise citizens' awareness of the new bicycle streets, the mobility department has planned several information events. An event will take place on October 17th from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Gollierplatz where visitors can take part in a traffic quiz and receive a free bike check. Mobility officer Georg Dunkel will also be on site and will be available to answer questions from 4 p.m. In addition to Gollierplatz, information stands will also be offered on October 11th in Thalkirchen and on October 13th in the Feldmoching-Hasenbergl district.

  • 11. Oktober, Thalkirchner Platz: 12 – 18 Uhr
  • 13. Oktober, Walter-Sedlmayr-Platz: 12 – 18 Uhr
  • 17. Oktober, Gollierplatz: 12 – 18 Uhr, Verkehrsquiz und Radl-Check

Particular attention is paid to safety: safety dividing strips have been marked on Wilramstrasse to protect cyclists from so-called dooring accidents. Do you know what that means? These are the dangerous accidents that happen when drivers don't pay attention to cyclists when getting out. An important topic that is addressed here!

Cycling in Germany and the future

However, the BUND criticizes that the new plans are not ambitious enough and is calling, among other things, for the share of cycling in cities to be doubled to 30 percent by 2030. In Munich, too, there is still a lot of work to do to drastically reduce the number of cyclists killed in traffic.

The developments in Munich show that the city is ready to live up to its responsibilities. Let's hope that these measures will advance cycling culture in Munich and make cycling safer and more enjoyable for everyone.
