Severe S-Bahn restrictions in Munich: construction work on the weekend!

Next weekend, more precisely from Saturday evening at 10:30 p.m. to Monday morning at 4:40 a.m., Munich S-Bahn passengers will have to prepare for restrictions on the main route. The reason is important construction work as part of the city's largest transport project, the second S-Bahn main line. This is reported by tz.de.

The S-Bahn lines will be affected this weekend as follows:

Additional traffic adjustments

Due to the construction work, there will also be a replacement rail service between Ostbahnhof and Trudering. Passengers should be prepared for the fact that the S-Bahn lines S3 and S6 cannot run continuously as usual. On the S-Bahn main line, only the S7 will run regularly between Ostbahnhof and Pasing, while other trains will have to use diversions or be canceled.

But the restrictions are not the only challenges at the weekend. The popular “Klassik am Odeonsplatz 2025” open-air concerts will also take place at the same time. This is what visitors can expect on site and could have additional impacts on bus traffic, particularly on routes close to the event.

Long-term improvements in mind

These construction measures are part of the “Strong S-Bahn Munich – Program 14plus” initiative, which was launched by Deutsche Bahn and the Bavarian State Ministry for Housing, Building and Transport. More than 1.5 billion euros will be invested in improving the S-Bahn infrastructure in order to connect the region even better. Specifically, the second S-Bahn main line will provide significant relief, and the first improvements in the form of 20-minute headways to the line end points and the introduction of new trains are expected from 2023. Details can be found on the [MVV Munich] website (https://www.mvv-muenchen.de/mvv-und-service/die-mvv-gmbh/projekte/s-bahn-planung/index.html).

The long-term project is expected to bring about various infrastructural improvements by the end of 2028, including the barrier-free expansion of several train stations and the creation of additional turning facilities. This is a further step towards sustainable and comfortable transport connections in the Munich metropolitan region.

We advise all passengers to adapt to the changed timetables in good time and, if necessary, to look for alternatives. Stay alert and enjoy the culture Munich has to offer this weekend!
