S-Bahn closures: Commuters between Ostbahnhof and Pasing affected!

Munich commuters will have to prepare for some inconveniences on the S-Bahn routes in the coming weeks. According to the Süddeutsche Zeitung, passengers between Ostbahnhof and Pasing must expect restrictions as S-Bahn operations will be stopped on several nights. The nights of the 23rd/24th are particularly affected. June to 25th/26th June, from June 30th/June 1st July to 3rd/4th July and 8/9. July to 9th/10th July. During these closure times, a rail replacement bus service will be set up from 10:20 p.m. to 5 a.m. to still get commuters to their destination. On Thursday and Friday, June 26th and 27th, only one line will run on the main route between Ostbahnhof and Pasing from 9:20 p.m. to 4:40 a.m. The reason for the disruption is construction work on the new electronic signal box at Ostbahnhof, which is necessary to bring the infrastructure up to date and thus optimize S-Bahn operations in the future.

During the construction work mentioned, other trains will also be affected by the changes. As the Munich S-Bahn reports, trains towards Erding begin and end at Ostbahnhof and travel from/to Riem without stopping. Trains in the direction of Petershausen and Altomünster also do not stop at the main station, but start from the Isartor. These changes also apply to numerous lines such as the S2, S3 and S4, especially during periods when the main route is only accessible to a limited extent. In addition, the S-Bahn service between Ostbahnhof and Giesing/Riem/Trudering is canceled, making additional journeys with replacement buses necessary to maintain mobility.

Overview of impairments

To give you a clear overview of the upcoming restrictions, here are the key details:

  • Betroffene Nächte:
    • 23./24. Juni bis 25./26. Juni
    • 30. Juni/1. Juli bis 3./4. Juli
    • 8./9. Juli bis 9./10. Juli
  • Sperrzeiten: 22.20 bis 5 Uhr
  • Ersatzverkehr: Zwischen Ostbahnhof und Trudering in allen betroffenen Nächten

As mentioned, on Wednesday, June 26th, only one line will run on the main route between Ostbahnhof and Pasing. For commuters this means preparing for increased capacity utilization and possibly longer waiting times. Anyone traveling from Geltendorf or Kreuzstraße will also have to change at Heimeranplatz or Giesing, as the connection via the main station platform 27-35 is no longer served. However, the S7 will run as scheduled and there is still the option to depart from Pasing.

Long-term railway construction projects

But passengers will not only have to prepare for restrictions in the coming weeks. Deutsche Bahn is planning further construction work during the summer holidays to modernize the S-Bahn infrastructure. These operations, under the “Strong Rail” project, will last several weeks and will also significantly impact traffic around the Ostbahnhof. As described in the article at Deutsche Bahn, it will be on the weekends of the 3rd and 4th. and 10/11. August there will be single-track journeys on the main route. A comprehensive replacement bus service will be put in place to maintain connectivity.

The Munich S-Bahn strives to keep commuters up to date on current developments. Information about the timetable changes is available s-bahn-muenchen.de and available at the stations.
