Olympic Games 2036: Four cities are fighting for the German application!

In Germany there are currently four candidate cities that are applying to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games: Berlin, Hamburg, Munich and the Rhine-Ruhr region. These cities have overcome the first hurdle and successfully submitted their application concepts to formal review by the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB). This was announced by DOSB President Thomas Weikert, which is an important step in the right direction for those involved.

All four concepts meet the minimum operational requirements, which are based on the specifications of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the DOSB standards. This means that travel times between the Olympic Village and the competition venues must be less than an hour. In addition, 90 percent of the competition venues must either already exist or be temporarily constructed, which makes it clear that the applicant cities must have a good hand here in order to be fulfilled.

Optimization of the concepts by May 2026

Applicants now have until the end of May 2026 to further develop and optimize their concepts. The ideas behind these concepts will be presented at the next DOSB general meeting on December 6th in Frankfurt. Weikert praised the cities' work so far and emphasized that all necessary efforts are being made to position the applications strongly.

Another crucial aspect in the application process are possible citizen referendums, which can be held until June 2026. In Munich, such a referendum is already scheduled for October 26, 2025, and other elections are scheduled for Kiel and Hamburg. Although a positive vote is not absolutely necessary for the IOC, it does strengthen social acceptance and support of the application.

A broad dialogue as a basis

The DOSB has been working on this Olympic bid since 2023 and has attached great importance to a comprehensive dialogue with the population. This was done through the “YOUR IDEAS. YOUR GAMES.” initiative, which included digital formats and analogue dialogue forums. A variety of ideas and opinions were summarized in the so-called “Frankfurt Declaration”, which now serves as the basis for the application. The DOSB receives broad support from local, state and federal politicians as well as from business.

There is still no set date for the question of the final application year; possible years are 2036, 2040 or 2044. A final decision on the applicant to be favored will be made at an extraordinary DOSB general meeting in autumn 2026. Until then, it will be exciting to see how the concepts will develop further.

The Olympic applications from Germany are very popular and not only offer sporting challenges, but also a wonderful opportunity to strengthen cohesion in society. It remains to be hoped that the city leaders will do their best to position Germany as a reliable host in the international sports community.

Further information about the applications can be found on Deutschlandfunk, Sportschau and the official DOSB website: Deutschlandfunk, Sports show and DOSB.
