Life -threatening cycle paths: residents demand quick solutions in Harlaching!

St.-Magnus-Straße, 81549 München, Deutschland - The discussion about the new cycle paths on St. Magnus-Straße in Untergiesing-Harlaching ensures plenty of ignition material. With the completion of the renovation work, a dispute in the district committee has flared up, which vehemently divides the opinions of residents and politics. The exact criticism: the bike paths, which were intended as safer and more environmentally friendly alternatives to the previous conditions, get into the line of fire. Residents complain that crossing the bike and car traces for pedestrians is not safe. A citizen letter to the district committee is used as an expression of these concerns. tz.de reports that BA member Ferdinand Brinkmöller even diagnoses a life-threatening situation on the street.

The basic conversion should actually increase safety for cyclists and set new green accents. Instead, the CSU parliamentary group criticizes the planning errors and indicates that the situation has become rather worse. "This street is partly life -threatening," said Brinkmöller, who speaks emphatically of the need for additional zebra crossing to pedestrian protection. Andreas Babor from the same parliamentary group sees those responsible to find solutions and not just to complain.

Criticism of waste of tax money and sustainable goals

A resident has found clear words: in her opinion, the renovation is a "tax money waste" and an "environmental level". A big topic is also the high costs of the project and the associated felling of trees. According to information from the Evening newspaper , only one tree is to be planted, while 26 new trees are to be planted. A proposal by this resident aims to remove the obligation to use the cycle path so that cyclists can drive safely on the street again.

The plans for the renovation were initially decided in October 2021 to improve the cycling infrastructure in the city, based on the 2035 mobility strategy. The strategy sets at least 80 percent of traffic movements to be exhaust -free by 2025 - and also creating more space for pedestrians and cyclists. After all, the city council is ready to critically review the planned conversions, as a source from the Mobility strategy 2035 .

The vision for Munich 2035

The strategy focuses on the area efficiency in traffic. Transportation such as public transport, cycling and foot traffic should be promoted compared to private cars that consume a lot of space. This goes hand in hand with the vision that all means of transport should be climate -neutral by 2035. Part of this strategy also pursues the “Vision Zero” - the goal of no more traffic fattening in Munich. An honorable goal that requires substantial changes in road traffic.

What remains is the open questions about practical implementation. The majority in the district committee has decided to forward the improvement proposals of the concerned residents to the mobility department. It is to be hoped that the discussion about the cycle paths not only remains a political banter, but also leads to noticeable improvements for all road users. A good hand is in demand, because the security of all users - from pedestrians to cyclists - must be a top priority.
