Summer is just around the corner, and with it the long-awaited oneSummer festival of the Bavarian National Museumon Sunday, July 13, 2025. From 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the idyllic inner courtyard of the museum at Prinzregentenstraße 3 will once again be a venue for art, culture and culinary delights. This year the festival has several anniversaries to celebrate: This is the anniversary Opening of the majestic building complex for the 125th time and the museum itself can look back on a proud 170 years of its founding.
Admission to this lively festival is free and promises a varied program. Visitors can look forward to a variety ofHandicrafts-enjoy experiences. The talented craftsmen will include porcelain painters, wood and stone sculptors, glass engravers and goldsmiths. The municipal vocational school for construction and arts and crafts will also be there with its students to show off their skills. A colorful supporting program with live music, dance performances and gastronomic offerings creates a festive atmosphere.
Upcycling and sustainability in handicrafts
A special highlight of the summer festival is the collaboration withPorcelain Manufactory Nymphenburg, which presents its “Generation T” initiative. Under the direction of designer Hella Jongerius, unfashionable porcelain objects will shine in new splendor. This Upcycling collection brings forgotten dishes back to life and raises awareness of sustainable table culture. Visitors can bring old Nymphenburg pieces to the factory to have them upgraded with new designs.
With this project, the manufacturer is also pursuing a sustainable approach and relies on the use of high-quality materials and traditional craft techniques. The overpainting is done exclusively by hand and requires a lot of experience - no two pieces are the same. Prices start at 120 euros for repainting, but each piece becomes unique.
Participatory activities for the whole family
The summer festival not only offers an insight into handicrafts, but also invites families to get active themselves.Participation stationsenable young and old to try out new things. Whether writing with goose feathers and soot ink, painting your own porcelain cups or trying out musical instruments - the ideas for creative development are diverse. Some activities charge a fee for materials, but the focus is on the joy of creating.
The guided tours are also an important part of the program: In addition to classic tours that provide insights into the museum's collections, participatory tours are also offered. Here visitors can bring their own metal objects and be inspired by the experts.
Tradition meets innovation
The increasing focus onsustainabilityin handicrafts is not only visible during the summer festival. More and more artists and craftsmen are relying on environmentally friendly materials and proven techniques that simultaneously preserve cultural heritage. The use of renewable raw materials, recycled materials and regional resources is becoming increasingly important, as in a recent article about the Importance of sustainability in arts and crafts is to be read.
Let yourself be inspired by the creative diversity and the joy of craftsmanship and enjoy a wonderful day in the Bavarian National Museum!
