Munich shows its colors: Cornering against the right at Rotkreuzplatz!

In Munich there is resistance against the increasingly present right-wing tendencies. The alliance “Together against the Right Munich” has launched an action called “Corners against the Right”. This will take place on Sunday, August 17th at Rotkreuzplatz. Here the organizers want to set an example against hate and right-wing presence in public spaces. At “Corners” people gather, listen to music, exchange ideas and thereby strengthen the community. The event is planned from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and promises a varied program with live music, creative activities and dialogue opportunities. The aim is for residents and passers-by to work together for an open, respectful society in which hate has no place. “Public spaces belong to all of us and not to extremists,” emphasizes the alliance, which is planning further actions with different focuses to take action against right-wing slogans. This is happening against the backdrop of an alarming increase in right-wing symbolism in the city, such as stickers, graffiti and demonstrations, which are unsettling many Munich residents.

Especially in view of the latest developments in the area of right-wing extremism, such a commitment is more important than ever. The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution recently classified the AfD as “certainly right-wing extremist”. This classification, which became public on Friday, could increase the likelihood of a party ban by the Federal Constitutional Court. For this reason, protests are being organized across Germany to persuade the new government to propose a ban on the AfD. Demonstrators have already protested against Friedrich Merz's collaboration with the AfD at the beginning of 2025 and loudly demanded that the AfD no longer be treated as an ordinary party. It becomes clear here that many citizens want to actively work against extremism and for a democratic society.

Alarming numbers and trends

Another worrying aspect is the instrumentalization of social issues by right-wing extremists. These positions are often used to incite hate speech against minorities, particularly the LGBTIQ community, which has led to an increase in attacks in recent years. For example, disruptive actions against Christopher Street Day events are not uncommon. These developments underline the urgency with which Munich and other cities must take action against right-wing extremist tendencies.

Munich against hatred

The upcoming event at Rotkreuzplatz is not just a local action, but part of a larger social outcry against right-wing extremism. The “Together Against Right Munich” alliance also wants to create a platform to unite the voices of those who stand up for values such as tolerance and respect outside of the political mainstream. In this sense, the alliance invites all Munich residents to become active and be part of the social atmosphere. The call to take part in the campaign is a sign that Munich residents will not put up with right-wing slogans. Thanks to joint activities, these values can shine in a positive light and send a clear message: hate has no place in our city.

It is already clear: The “Corner against the Right” campaign will not only be the stage for music and conversations, but also for a strong commitment to civil society and against any form of extremism. Be there!
