On June 15, 2025 the time has come: Veterans Day will be celebrated in Germany for the first time. On this special day, the focus is on recognizing the achievements and commitment of active and former Bundeswehr soldiers. How haz.de reported, all veterans in Hanover receive free entry to city museums, which is intended to be a sign of thanks and respect.
In total, several important institutions are taking part in this campaign. These include the Sprengel Museum, the August Kestner Museum and the Herrenhausen Gardens with their numerous attractions, including the Great Garden, the Berggarten and the Herrenhausen Castle Museum. To benefit from this free entry, veterans must provide official documentation to prove their status. These include, for example, the veteran badge or a troop or reservist ID card, as stated in a statement from the State capital Hanover is to be read.
Veterans Day activities
But June 15th is not just limited to museums. This day is also celebrated in other parts of the Hanover region. Lehrte, for example, hoists two flags at the town hall, while the Seelzer town hall wears a yellow ribbon as a sign of solidarity with the soldiers. In addition, a ceremony will be held in the state legislature at which a special yellow ribbon with the inscription “National Veterans Day” will be distributed. This loop also serves as an ID card for free entry to the museums.
The legal basis for Veterans Day was decided by the Bundestag in April 2024. The goal of this facility is to strengthen the connection between soldiers and civil society and to promote a culture of respect and appreciation for the services of veterans. Veterans are not only considered honorably discharged, but also include active soldiers and reservists, regardless of their health status.
