Munich celebrates 800 years of foundation tradition: millions for social purposes!

Something is happening in the area of foundations in Munich! At the end of 2024, the city could proudly point to remarkable achievements. The committed entrepreneur Alexandra Schörghuber handed over a generous donation check worth around 260,000 euros to Mayor Dieter Reiter. This is only a small part of what the Munich foundation administration has achieved, which oversees over 180 foundations with social objectives. A look at the numbers shows: In 2024, over six million euros were distributed for individual aid and grants, a real ray of hope for many citizens.

Particularly notable are the expenses for the maintenance of foundation-owned children's and old people's homes - over 2.8 million euros were invested here. The trust that the people of Munich have placed in foundations for more than 800 years is reflected in the continuous support of social projects. The foundation administration has made it its mission to direct the funds to where they are most urgently needed in order to improve the quality of life for many.

Important projects and initiatives

A particularly pleasing project was made possible by the Roswitha Munz Foundation and the Gerd and Annemarie Thomas Foundation, which financed the redesign of two patient rooms in the palliative care ward at Harlaching Hospital. The Munich Clinic Clowns can also look forward to support: The Karl and Anneliese Hofmeister Foundation, the Mina and Max Schlenger Foundation and the Hedwig and Georg Semmler Foundation have offered their help. These initiatives show how important the involvement of foundations in the city is.

Another highlight is the Plan A Jobcamp project in the trade fair city of Riem, which is supported by the URBS Foundation. It is aimed at disadvantaged teenagers and young adults and thus offers them new perspectives. The foundation administration also helps in a variety of ways, be it through subsidies for medication, artistic needs of scholarship holders or equestrian therapy for children with disabilities.

Invitation to participate

If you would like to become active yourself, you have the option of contacting the foundation administration. It offers comprehensive advice on setting up new foundations as well as endowments and donations. Anyone interested can find the contact details quickly and easily: the administration can be reached by telephone at 233-49301 or by email at stiftungsverwaltung.soz@muenchen.de.

It is also interesting to know that there is a Bavarian list of foundations maintained by the Bavarian State Office for Statistics. This database, which can be searched online, includes all legal foundations in accordance with the Bavarian Foundation Act. It also shows defunct foundations and foundations that have moved their headquarters from Bavaria. Although the information on private foundations may not be complete, the directory still provides a good overview of the foundation landscape in Bavaria. You can find out more about this on the Bavarian Foundation Directory website here.

One thing is certain: Munich will continue to be able to rely on its foundations in the future, which work tirelessly to improve the lives of many people. It is to be hoped that the commitment of foundations will continue to be very popular and that many more projects can be realized.

For anyone who has questions about the various funding options and the establishment of foundations, contacting the foundation administration is the first step. Now it's up to you to take action and do something good!
