Main line construction site in Munich: S-Bahn chaos from today!

Things will be a bit turbulent on the rails in Munich in the coming days. Comprehensive construction work on the second main line in Laim will begin from today, October 31, 2025, and will last until November 10, 2025. During this time, passengers have to adapt to a variety of changes, including deviations in the route and cancellations of stops. Particularly affected are the S-Bahn lines S3, S5/S7, S8 and the S2, some of which will not run between Donnersbergerbrücke and Ostbahnhof. A replacement bus service will be set up for the affected connections, starting at 10:20 p.m. on the first day of the construction work [news.de].

The S-Bahn lines S1, S2, S3, S4, S5/S7, S6 and S8 will experience various limited timetables during the construction period. For example, the S1 trains start in Moosach, and the S2 also ends there due to the work on the Hackerbrücke. Travelers are therefore encouraged to access current information via the DB and Munich Navigator apps as well as online information media to take possible track changes and extended travel times into account.

Travel planning made easy

Deutsche Bahn (DB) strives to keep the disruption as low as possible. In 2023, the punctuality of long-distance trains was 64%, while DB Regio recorded a punctuality level of 92-93%. The unpunctual journeys are often due to construction sites, technical malfunctions and necessary renovations, among other factors, as Deutsche Bahn notes.

Overall, the construction project demonstrates DB's ongoing efforts to modernize the infrastructure and keep travelers in mind. This is done not least through the “Building in Pace” program, which was launched in 2023. The aim is to better harmonize the necessary construction work with rail traffic and at the same time optimize the planning of maintenance measures. From July 15, 2024, maintenance work will take place on a quarterly basis, which should ensure more stability in the timetable, according to DB.

A look into the future

For 2025, DB plans to increase the frequency of maintenance work from four to eight weeks in order to enable better planning. Innovative approaches to resolving faults and maintaining smooth operations are being tested. This proactive management is important to ensure passenger satisfaction and increase the reliability of train connections.

An increase in travel volume is also expected in the coming Christmas season, with around 4.9 million long-distance travelers, which corresponds to an increase of 8% compared to the previous year. In order to offer passengers an optimal experience, Deutsche Bahn has already increased the capacity of its ICE fleet and is relying on modernized routes and consistently reliable service.

In summary, the coming week will be a challenging time for all rail customers in Munich. With the upcoming construction work, some adjustments will be necessary, but efforts to keep rail operations stable and increase comfort remain in the foreground. Travelers should inform themselves early and use the digital services offered by DB in order to be well prepared.
