Holidaymakers in Turkey: Mixx Travel's insolvency causes chaos and costs

In the summer heat, vacation lasts too long for many, but not everyone is in such fortunate situations. On July 31, 2025, the Swedish tour operator Mixx Travel filed for bankruptcy, which has fatal consequences for around 1,300 German and Swedish tourists. These holidaymakers are now stuck in Turkey and Greece and have to deal with unforeseen costs as hotel providers demand additional payments from them.

A particularly affected example is the story of Sara Helene Lund-Tønnesen, who reported from a hotel in Alanya: “We are supposed to pay double.” Hotel manager Elvan Gunes confirmed that her hotel had not received any payments from the organizer, making the situation even more difficult for guests. Many holidaymakers are forced to book new return flights because the airline Norwegian has canceled all Mixx Travel bookings from August 2nd.

Return travel costs and compensation

The financial burden is significant. Steffen Schei said that he had to raise around 1,700 euros for new flights for his family. The hotel in Turkey also requires that holidaymakers take care of their return journey. In order to financially cover the costs of the repatriation exercise, the company's insurance policies should be in place to cover return trips and possible compensation. However, it should be noted that applications must be submitted within three months of the insolvency becoming known.

Since the bankruptcy, Mixx Travel has immediately ceased operations. Ercan Secilmis, the owner, explained that the trips sold also affect customers from Denmark, Norway and Finland and they regret the drastic impact on customers, partners and employees. Mixx Travel is providing guarantees worth 28.4 million crowns, which should potentially be enough to cover the repatriation costs and compensation claims of the stranded passengers. Customers are advised to contact Kammarkollegiet in Sweden or the Consumer Protection Agency in Finland for further information.

Extreme weather conditions complicate the situation

To make matters worse, there is an extreme heat wave in Turkey, which not only dampens the holiday spirit, but also leads to water shortages. The unexpected challenges arising from the bankruptcy and the hot weather pose major challenges for the holidaymakers affected. It remains to be seen how the situation will continue, because for many it is now clear that the journey is far from over.
