Over 1,100 Zillen crews fight in the water defense competition in Schärding!
Last weekend in Schärding there was a lot of activity around the Inn. Over 1,100 fire brigade crews were deployed at the large state water brigade competition. The exciting event, which emphasized both sport and preparation for emergencies, was organized by the State Fire Brigade Association and the Schärding Fire Department. The aim was to identify the best Zillen crews who wanted to secure the water defense performance badge in bronze and silver. Nachrichten.at reported that the routes along the Schärdinger Innlände were well prepared and could be seen from the Old Inn Bridge.
The water level at the start of the competition was 3.88 meters and the water temperature was around 15 degrees. Despite some difficulties with the strong water current, the competition area remained intact and all participants were able to concentrate safely on the tasks. It is particularly worth mentioning that many of the participants were already on duty during the devastating floods in Schärding in 2013. This shared experience has etched letters and names into the memories of many.

Experiences from the past
As a reminder: On June 3, 2013, a catastrophic flood took place in Schärding, which required the region's emergency services. The affected residential buildings were evacuated with a large number of helpers, including 17 water rescue workers and several boats. Many people were saved, including a small child and a bedridden person. This striking experience led communities to prepare even better for future floods.
In order to optimally prepare emergency services for such scenarios, training is of utmost importance. The Flood Protection Academy is committed to developing comprehensive training for disaster relief workers. It cooperates with various organizations and is committed to pooling and optimizing knowledge about flood events.
In times when natural events are occurring more and more frequently, it is essential to be prepared beyond sporting competitions. The past experiences and today's committed participation in the competitions are important steps in the right direction.
