Munich decides: 66.4% for Olympic application – but hurdles remain!

Today, October 29, 2025, the city of Munich voted with an impressive majority of 66.4 percent to apply to host the Olympic Games. In this way, the Bavarian capital shows that the sporting future is important to it. However, it remains unclear whether the Games will take place in Munich in 2036, 2040 or 2044, as there are still some hurdles that need to be overcome. Prime Minister Markus Söder stated that he wanted to increase the pressure on the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) in order to reach a quick decision. Mercury reports that Munich must first wait for decisions from other regions that are also part of the application.

A look at the schedule shows that referendums are already being prepared in other cities. In Augsburg, for example, an online survey is being carried out, while in Kiel a decision-making process is scheduled for April 19, 2026. Further referendums are also planned in the Rhine-Ruhr region and in Hamburg. Things will get exciting on December 6, 2025, when the final DOSB evaluation criteria will be discussed in Frankfurt am Main. Finally, the IOC is also called upon, which is why the DOSB will enter into a “continuous dialogue” with the International Olympic Committee at the end of November 2025.

The challenge of planning

In addition to political approval, Munich is also working intensively on refining the application concept. The focus here is on competition venues, training facilities and urban development projects, which will be crucial to the success of the application. But the competition never sleeps. Countries such as Qatar, India, some African nations and Madrid are already showing interest in the 2036 Olympic Games. The final decision as to which location Germany will represent will be made in September 2026, and preparations are in full swing.

It remains exciting to see how things will develop. The citizens of Munich have sent a strong signal with their clear vote, but a lot of commitment and teamwork will still be necessary to overcome the challenges ahead. Interest in the Olympic Games not only has sporting dimensions, but also social and economic dimensions that could have a lasting impact on everyday life in the city.
