Kidical Mass in Augsburg: Children active for safe streets!
Next Sunday, September 28th, it will be “cycling for the little ones” again in Augsburg. The children's bicycle parade, also known as Kidical Mass, is going into the next round and is setting an example for child-friendly traffic design. How New scene reports, the event is organized by Teresa Lukaschik and is characterized by a strong community feeling. Led by beaming children on balance bikes, children's bikes and even cargo bikes, the young participants make their way from Königsplatz into the city center to Wittelsbacher Park. Even the smallest cyclists will ride in trailers and seats on the demonstration route of around 5 kilometers.
The parade starts at 2:30 p.m., but an hour beforehand all little cyclists have the opportunity to creatively decorate their vehicles with balloons and banners. The motto and message are clear: “The streets are there for everyone” and “My route to school is mine”. Amid bright colors and musical accompaniment, this day will also be a happy celebration around the topic of safe mobility for children. A picnic is planned at the end point in Wittelsbacher Park, where the little cyclists can play carefree.
Road safety for the next generation
The campaign, which is part of a Europe-wide week of action for fair transport, aims to improve road safety for children. Given the alarming figures, this is urgently needed. There were a lot of accidents in 2024 BMV A total of 27,261 children in traffic, with 53 tragically dying - including eight as cyclists. The Kidical Mass events and similar campaigns are intended to draw attention to these dangers and make traffic significantly more child-friendly.
The organizers of Kidical Mass, including ADFC Augsburg, Parents for Future and Omas for Future, are committed to ensuring that children and young people can be mobile safely and independently. A large part of the work is done on a voluntary basis. Anyone who would like to support the movement can do so through donations. Together for a better future
The Kidical Mass is taking place in Augsburg for the tenth time and is held in both spring and autumn. The route includes various streets, all of which are intended to ensure a safe route to school and child-friendly urban design. With the newfound awareness in society, the focus is on children's safety in traffic - an important measure to advance the mobility transition and improve the interaction between traffic planning and child safety.
