Construction site chaos in Laim: Residents fight against massive traffic stress
A look at the Munich district of Laim currently shows a picture that is not very encouraging: where there were once quiet streets and hustle and bustle, the residents and business owners find themselves in the middle of a huge construction chaos. The track construction work on the tram west tangent and on tram line 19 is putting an enormous strain on residents and businesses. Thomas Eschenbach, a vehicle expert with 25 years of professional experience on Agnes-Bernauer-Straße, reports on the enormous difficulties he is currently experiencing. In order to provide his walk-in customers with attractive access, he has rented parking spaces behind his store office. But with the construction work since June, it's no longer an easy path, according to tz.
The announcement that the access roads should remain accessible at all times does not seem to be possible in reality. Eschenbach received notification of a complete lockdown on August 18th, which was to last until September 9th. This unexpected turn of events led to a drastic reduction in foot traffic and thus a noticeable decline in sales. “The communication from the municipal utilities is catastrophic,” complains the vehicle expert. He felt like he was being let down significantly, which also had a negative impact on his health.
Construction work and its effects
The construction projects in Laim have not only severely affected Eschenbach's business, but also the entire traffic structure in the district. “The work on the Westtangente tram is slowing down,” reports westtangente.mvg.de, “the performance of Fürstenrieder Straße by around 70 percent”. This causes regular traffic jams and a completely different traffic situation. There is currently only one lane in each direction, which puts considerable strain on the main traffic arteries in Laim and sometimes brings traffic to a standstill.
It's not just Agnes-Bernauer-Strasse that suffers from these circumstances; Other roads such as Gotthardstrasse and A96 are also affected. The Hogenberg underpass is completely closed and parking vehicles and crossings are no longer possible at times. Such construction sites are a huge test of patience for residents. Another example are the restrictions that affect entering or exiting from Hogenbergstrasse into Fürstenrieder Strasse. The first phase of this construction work at the intersection of Fürstenrieder Straße and Agnes-Bernauer-Straße is expected to last until December 19, 2025 stadt.muenchen.de.
A desperate call for improvement
Eschenbach has shown sufficient patience and has already written to numerous places, including the tz, the mayor and the municipal utilities, to point out the urgent need for better communication. “It's not just me, but many other business owners who are affected,” he explains, emphasizing that inadequate information about the construction work is making life difficult for residents and business people. In addition, residents were informed in a supposed letter about new closures until December 2025.
The question in all of this is: How long will the residents of Laim have to wait for the situation to normalize? Turns out that despite the discomfort and clear communication, they may need a “good knack” for patience and perseverance to get through this phase.
