Construction work on the S-Bahn: failures between Ostbahnhof and Pasing!
The Bavarian capital has to adapt to some changes in S-Bahn traffic. How Radio gong reported, extensive construction work will take place on the 2nd main line in Laim from Saturday, July 12, 2025, from 10:30 p.m. to Monday, July 14, 2025, at 4:40 a.m. This has a direct impact on S-Bahn traffic around Munich, especially between Ostbahnhof and Pasing. As a result of the construction work, there will be diversions, canceled stops and changes to the scheduled start and end points.
What exactly can passengers expect these days? The official traffic plan for the Munich S-Bahn already contains some details that show how profound the changes are. The Munich S-Bahn announces that the S1, S2, S3, S4, S5, S6, S7 and S8 trains will be particularly affected. The exact timetables vary, so passengers should pay close attention to avoid being on the wrong train.
Affected lines and changes
Let's start with the S1 trains. These leave from the main station (platforms 20-26) and do not stop until Moosach. There will also be changes to the S2. The trains towards Erding start at Ostbahnhof and do not stop along the way until Riem. The S3 will also be restricted, with trains heading towards Holzkirchen terminating in Giesing.
- S1 (Freising/Flughafen): Ab Hauptbahnhof (Gleis 20-26), ohne Halt bis Moosach.
- S2 (Erding): Ab Ostbahnhof, ohne Halt bis Riem.
- S3 (Holzkirchen): Endstation Giesing, während Mammendorf in Pasing endet.
- S4: Ausfälle zwischen Trudering und Pasing.
- S5: Züge in Richtung Kreuzstraße enden in Giesing, Ausfälle zwischen Giesing und Pasing.
- S6: Züge in Richtung Ebersberg starten in Trudering, Schienenersatzverkehr zum Ostbahnhof.
- S7: Fährt weiterhin planmäßig zwischen Hauptbahnhof und Wolfratshausen.
- S8: Züge nach Herrsching enden in Pasing.
How Railway blog post points out, these are not the only planned restrictions. The S-Bahn system will also be noticeably out of sync during the summer holidays. Deutsche Bahn is using summer time, when there are fewer passengers, to carry out extensive construction work. For example, between August 14th and 19th there will be no trains at all between Isartor and Ostbahnhof, and Ostbahnhof will only be served by line S2.
Replacement traffic and long-term improvements
In order to mitigate the disruption for passengers, a replacement bus service will be set up, particularly between Isartor and Johanneskirchen. However, these measures are necessary to improve the S-Bahn connection in the long term and minimize future delays. The new electronic signal box at Ostbahnhof is being introduced to make operations more efficient.
Passengers are therefore well advised to regularly check the current information about timetables on the S-Bahn websites. With a little patience and the right planning, the people of Munich will get through this construction phase well despite the restrictions. Because one thing is clear: When everything is completed, the S-Bahn network will be further optimized and upgraded.
