Classical music at Odeonsplatz: Stars, puzzles and a coveted concert!

Next weekend it's that time again: a festival of classical sounds awaits music lovers on Odeonsplatz. Klassik am Odeonsplatz, this top-class classical event in Germany, captivates thousands of visitors every year. As the South German newspaper reports, there will be some special highlights this year that visitors can look forward to.

Lisa Katharina Strohmeier recently solved three puzzles in the BR Klassik Lounge and is now looking forward to the two tickets she won. She is particularly excited about the musical diversity on the program this year, including works by Sergei Prokofiev and Richard Strauss. It remains to be seen whether she will be able to experience the performances of Daniil Trifonov, who plays Prokofiev's Third Piano Concerto on Saturday, live.

A new framework for great music

The event, which has been held since 2000 - with interruptions in 2001 and 2020 - will take place this year on a newly installed arched stage. But the joy about the innovations is somewhat dampened because due to renovation work on the Feldherrnhalle, there are 1,000 fewer places available than in previous years. This means that only 7,000 tickets are available per evening this year. Despite this restriction, tickets were already sold out in January.

BR director Katja Wildermuth will also welcome Charlotte Knobloch, President of the Jewish Community of Munich and Upper Bavaria, to the opening. The event on Saturday will feature the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, while on Sunday the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra will play under the direction of Franz Welser-Möst. He also conducts his own version of a suite to Richard Strauss' “Rosenkavalier”. As the BRSO website added, the new Munich cultural advisor Marek Wiechers will also be among the guests of honor and will express his enthusiasm for the event.

Artistic masterpieces

Another highlight of the event is the appearance on Sunday by Lisa Batiashvili, who will play Beethoven's Violin Concerto. Daniil Trifonov has already played at Klassik am Odeonsplatz in 2016 and 2019 and always shows his best side on stage. Sir Simon Rattle, who is responsible for this year's program, has even selected some excerpts from Wagner's Walküre, which will certainly be a breath of fresh air. In an interview, Johannes Brahms noted that “wonderful things” will be performed in this selection.

The weather is at its best this year - in contrast to last year, when storms and rain affected the performance. This positive weather forecast could lead to many music lovers who do not have a ticket following the event via live stream. As the Website in Munich highlights, the performance will be broadcast live on YouTube, and the later TV recordings can then be enjoyed on BR and 3sat.

Classical music at Odeonsplatz not only remains a highlight in Munich's cultural life, but also attracts over 8,000 visitors who want to experience the musical diversity of this city. Whether as part of the large concerts or in the smaller venues, a diverse program is guaranteed.

So it can be said that there is a lot on offer at Odeonsplatz next weekend and everyone who was able to get a ticket can look forward to a big music event.
