Munich is testing electric minibuses: flexible and environmentally friendly!

A lot is currently happening in Munich when it comes to environmentally friendly mobility. The city's mobility department has launched the test operation of flexible electric minibuses to test innovative solutions for local public transport. This initiative is supported by funds allocated by the City Council in August 2025. How Munich on the way reports, the new electric minibuses are specifically designed to better serve suburban areas and tight quarters.

The electric vehicles offer space for around ten passengers and are used primarily on narrow streets or in areas with less demand. A special highlight: A group of up to three minibuses can work together to serve more popular routes. This makes mobility even more flexible and accessible.

Positive feedback from the test operation

After the test started, there was consistently positive feedback from drivers and passengers. The environmentally friendly buses, which impress with a modern design, create a pleasant atmosphere during the journey. In addition to the easy accessibility of the driving staff, the comfort of getting in and out was also praised. Accessibility is very important because the ramp for wheelchair users extends electrically to make it easy for everyone to use.

The Munich Transport Company (MVG) plans to incorporate the knowledge gained from this test into its future considerations. Things get particularly exciting when it comes to possible autonomous driving, which, according to initial manufacturer information, could be ready for series production from 2027/2028. A big step in efficiency! These autonomous buses could reduce operating costs in public transport while price differentiation remains the same.

Looking into the future

From the beginning of 2026, the offer between Neuaubing and Freiham is to be further improved. MVG will continue to analyze the test results to see how local public transport can be made even more customer-friendly. The public's reaction to this test operation is already encouraging and shows that a good hand was used in the selection of vehicles and that new standards in mobility can perhaps even be set.

So it remains exciting to see how the offering will develop and what role electric minibuses will play in the future of Munich transport. Because there will be a challenge ahead of us in the next few years that can significantly influence not only the cityscape, but also the quality of life of its citizens.
